View Full Version : new to group/351E V6 rebuild

Hi there, I have a 351E v6 that was given to me 10 years ago. It now sits between a ford model A front end and a 37 Plymouth P/U cab, a 93 T5 tranny will connect to a 54 Pontiac 8 rear end.
removing the heads I discovered 2 damaged cylinder walls, one to wear and one to rust. I love the engine but am afraid I have painted myself into a corner.
has anyone bored out a 351 block and if so what next size pistons would be used?
any guidance in the rebuild before me would be greatly apreciated.

From this particular source, pistons are offered in .020, .030, .040 and .060.

My personal preference would be to use the smallest oversize which will clean up the existing bores.

First, you will need to mike the bores to see if the engine has been rebored before. You shouldn't assume that the bores are standard size now.

I agree with Ray, however, these engine cylinders do have a lot of meat to them so if you had to bore out .020 to .030, you'd probably still be alright. Good luck with the build and keep posting your progress! I am also building a 351E right now.

As Cort pointed out, the cylinder wall thickness is more than enough so that safety concerns shouldn't be an issue.

I should have been clearer about that point when I talked about using the smallest possible oversize. What I meant was, if I were planning to keep the engine for a long time and drive it a lot, I would try to get the maximum number of rebores out of the block before having to replace it. This is probably a non-issue if the owner is a hobbyist rather than using the engine for a daily driver.
