I tried putting this in my build journal but have not gotten any answers. So, please excuse the double post...

Well, I am about ready to remove this funky bumper.

However, I have some questions about mounting the standard bumper. First, I assumed, for no apparent reason, that due to the shape of the brackets that the frame would fit between the two bracket pieces on each side. However, in this image from the 1960-1966 Chevy/GMC Truck Assembly manual, it appears that both bracket pieces sit on the outside of the frame rail. Is this correct?

Also, since my funky bumper was welded to the frame, I have to figure out how to get it off.

It is not apparent in these two pics, but they welded a cross piece between the frame rails as well which have more metal brackets welded between it and the bumper. I am hoping it is far enough back to be out of the way with the funky bumper off. Although in the second pick I am thinking the weld and splatter are interfering with what I assume to be one of the bolt holes.

Once I do get the bumper off, I am really not sure what holes to use to mount the brackets to. Does anyone have pics that show their bumper brackets mounted to the frame? ...Thanks.

I would probably run a grinder on the bumper mounts outside the bumper and just grind them off to pokey points so the bumper falls off on the ground while I'm in the truck bed. Then I'd crawl under it and grind the welds off for safety. Those little brackets hurt less than a whole bumper would.

I can't help with the mounts though. I think Mr Foley posted some pics of a factory mount a few months back. I'll see if I can find them...Wait right here.....

It was DAC, not Foley. Here's a link:

Hope that points you in the right direction. Bumpers are HEAVY so be careful and have your helper take lots of pics :D

Hi guys, those brackets I posted are factory made, but not a GMC factory. They were probably made by the bumper manufacturer. They are for an aftermarket bumper probably similar to the bumper Aphaynes is removing.

Fetch is right on, the welds don't look substantial enough where cutting them with a grinder shouldn't be too difficult.

Thanks guys. Yeah DAC, I wish whoever put that bumper on would have used brackets. I guess way back whenever, they had a reason for welding it in like that.

I just spotted a metal & fab shop about two miles from my house I have never noticed. Evidently they have been there for about a year now. I stopped in with Rusty and they said they could cut it off and clean it up for about $40. Since my tools are few I am thinking it might be worth to let them do it. However, with the brackets for my standard bumper, I am still not sure which holes they bolt to. Once the ugly bumper is out of the way, I will be able to figure it out I think.

I am in the process of mounting my new bumper. I do not like how far it sits out. Seems that rear leaf spring mount is in the way of pushing sport bumper closer. What are other GMC owners doing to get bumper closer? Are there special bumper brackets for leaf spring trucks, like there are for the 67-72 trucks?
