1967 GMC Pickups

Some of you may be aware that 1967 is my favorite year for GMC pickups. Although I prefer the style of the 1960 to 1966 GMC Suburbans to the 1967 to 1972 Suburbans, I prefer the style of the 1967 to 1972 pickups to the earlier generation. In particular, I like the '67s with the small back windows and lack of side marker lights (one year only), and the low profile hood shared with the '68s. Up until a year ago, I owned two '67s, the 2WD that I still own, and a 4WD that I sold on Craigslist to a local guy. I had recently moved down out of the mountains, and didn't need 4WD any longer.

I was hoping to use the funds raised by selling the 4WD to buy a local 2WD '67 GMC. I had been trying unsuccessfully for a couple of years to buy this particular truck, but the owner wasn't interested in selling. His Dad had bought the truck new in Wyoming. I stopped by again last October trying to buy it again, and John finally agreed to sell it to me. It had been sitting for about three years at that point. I asked John to give me a call when he got it running. While I was waiting for him to call back, I found out that I needed to install a handicap ramp for my 93 year old mother-in-law in Yuma. When I returned a couple of weeks later, I found out that John had sold his '67 to someone else while I was gone. I was not happy! He wouldn't tell me who bought it either.

So I posted a "want to buy" ad on Craigslist, saying:
*Will pay $100 finder's fee if you find me the right 1967 GMC pickup similar to the one in the photo. Prefer half ton, short wide box, with V6 engine, but will consider any you can find.*

I used the attached photo. Don't remember where I got it -- probably from another Craigslist ad long ago. I finally got a response a few days ago from a guy in Montana. He said he knew of a truck there which he had been trying to buy. He said he'd check again to see of the owner wanted to sell it yet.

Stay tuned tomorrow for the rest of the story, as Paul Harvey used to say.

Great but tragic story so far Ed...I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it will come together in the end. Staying tuned in - Henry

Best of luck to you! Sorry I don't want to sell mine, but if I did I would let you know.

Your truck is awesome, Bob! Even if you did want to sell it, I probably couldn't afford it. I'll never forget riding in it with you when we went out to lunch together.

But I've been wanting a half ton anyway, not another 3/4 ton. The half tons are almost 400 pounds lighter and have taller rear end gearing. Thus, more economical -- easier on tires and gasoline. And I don't really need the extra hauling capacity. They should handle a little better too. They are harder to find though, for some reason.

I'll keep my eye out Ed. Here is a 67 in the Denver area. Doesn't have the 305 though. Body looks straight.

That sounds like what I have - 67 half w 305 originally, although now a 351 and three on the tree and a 3.08 rear end. Stumbled on it a few years ago and that's when I learned about the v6. Not really looking to sell, but not totally stuck on it either, then I'm a little further away from you than Montana too :)

It's pretty sad what that guy did to you on that one you had cut a deal on. Man some lucky person scored well on the one in your pic Ed! $700 bucks? Wow, great buy!

I went back and looked at the date on that pic, Doug -- 2008. Prices have definitely escalated since then!

And now for the rest of the story.

The guy from Montana never called back. That's OK though -- I didn't really want to travel all the way to Montana unless it was the perfect truck for the perfect price. Nothing against Montana -- just drove across it on the way back home last summer after visiting DAC in Rapid City and taking our 11 year old granddaughter to Mt. Rushmore there.

I finally got another reply to my "want to buy" ad last Thursday. The guy said he had just posted an ad on Craigslist for his '67 GMC. So I pulled up his ad and I couldn't believe it! It was the same truck that John had agreed to sell me last October and then sold to someone else! I called the seller, Tom, and arranged to go see it that same day. I definitely did not want to miss out on another chance to buy it.

I played dumb while looking it over and listening to Tom's sales pitch. He said he had been trying to buy it from John for about 8 years, stopping by every year or two to try again. He happened to stop by last October while John was getting it ready for me to buy. Evidently he convinced John that he should have first rights to it since he had been trying to buy it for so long.

Since buying it Tom had installed a new radiator, had the carb rebuilt, replaced the battery, air filter, and fuel filter. He claimed his asking price was what he had in it, and was firm on his price. I didn't argue with him or make a counter-offer. After we exchanged cash and title, I confessed that I was the other guy trying to buy it from John. He laughed and said he was glad I was finally getting it. He said he needed the money to finish his '64 Impala with a 409 in it.

The photos below are the ones from Tom's Craigslist ad. Someone had hit the left side of the bed while it was parked in front of John's house several years ago. He had the whole bedside replaced which accounts for the different color. Most of the truck is the dreaded Palomino Tan which fades to pink. Although Tom's ad stated the truck has a 305, it's actually a 351. It's got the SM420 four speed and power steering. The body is pretty straight. The only rust-through I can find is a small area at the driver's door threshold next to the sill plate. Cab corners, rockers, fender bottoms are all solid. Considering that the truck has sat outdoors for probably its whole life, it's in pretty good shape. Having only 60,574 miles on it helps too. It's a keeper!

That is fantastic! 351 is a bonus too. Hope you didn't have to pay too much more than you were going to buy it in the first place! Congrats!
