VIN Decoder
Do we have any VIN Decoders or any info on Decoding VIN's on GMC 4000's and Larger Trucks?
I have plenty of Chevy info, but always have had trouble finding GMC info. Any help would be appreciated. Bill |

Re: VIN Decoder
I'm familiar with Jolly's site and not exactly what I am looking for, but have to say that the link provided does give more info than I remembered.
Thanks. |
Re: VIN Decoder
Did you try our Vin decoder? I've never gone past a 1 ton GMC so I don't know if it works for larger or not.

But I did find it and did try it and it didn't work. Big Truck Codes are different and hard to find info on for some reason, online included. Funny, as I have plenty of Chevy Books, but never was able to happen upon any Big Truck GMC Books through the years. They must be hiding them, lol. |

Re: VIN Decoder
Well, I'm always trying to help out guys with different trucks on different boards, but the last one in particular was: VH4008G1529F
What I can tell from that is it is a '63 GMC 4000 Conventional model. But not real sure what the "H" stands for (possibly Hydraulic Brakes ?) and I know the "F" is for the GVW range, and I can guess at it, but not real sure. I would like to find the info to decode everything letter by letter and number by number precisely. The one above is really one of the easier ones. Some of the ones we get are a pretty good challenge, lol. |
Re: VIN Decoder
Heck you know more than I can figure. lol Hopefully someone will chime in on the vin.
VH4008G1529F V: Vacuum Hydraulic Brakes H: Heavy Duty 40: 4000 Series 08: Wheel base???? G: 1963 1529 unit to roll off the assembly line F: GVW Rating Best I can make of it. |

F - 19,501 to 26,000 GVW When I get a little time to dig through my books I'll see if I can turn up the WB information. Otherwise the above list looks spot on. Caveat though... GM for some reason changed the VIN throughout the 60s on the bigger trucks, to my knowledge 5500s and bigger. Most will decode just fine, like the above was, but others will have letters that make no sense. I have a few brochures that have some data for larger trucks. The 4000 are technically classes with the pickups as the factory manuals are 1000-5000 series. Most will use the same nomenclature. |
