What starter did the 305e with a powerglide use

Ok, I have the SM420 out and everything cleaned up.

I just put the Powerglide to 305e back adapter plate and flywheel on. Went to check the starter line up and its not even close.

I checked several parts sites, NAPA, O'Reilleys and didn't see one listed. Rock Auto lists a reman ACDELCO 3361860 Starter Motor, but the photo looks like a shevy small block v8 block mount unit.

1. Can't you ask where you bought the adapter?
2. What vehicle exactly did you search at RockAuto? No. 305 V6 listed in 1966. No number you posted listed 63-65????????????????? for 2500. All 305's list starter 25372 for manual trans. No automatic that I see.
3. Exactly what does "not line up" mean? X, Y or Z axis?

This starter fits a lot of V-6's:

The 305E was used up to 1974 so I checked RockAuto's catalog GMC 2500-3500 series in that year range . I found later year listings with automatics. I used the 1968 / 3500 / 5.0L 305 v6 listing.

The manual starter from the SM420 has two bolts and the adapter in a 3 bolt pattern.

Here's a picture of my 305e adapter.

I ordered an ACDelco Starter - Part Number: 336-1849 from AutoZone. The RockAuto description says standard Transmission, but the picture shows the 3 hole pattern. If it doesn't work out I can return it to any local AutoZone.

I have one of those automatic adapters as well so it will good to find out if that starter will be the correct one.

I screwed up the number in my post. So just to correct that it's 25372. Same as BobBray and your no. 2.
Looks like your number you ordered checks out on AutoZone.
Very weird about this starter. Fits so many motors. Rockauto shows both starters you posted for 68 2500 manual trans. I have to believe they both fit the same motor. The two hole is rotated such that it utilizes just two out of three holes.

The ACDelco Starter - Part Number: 336-1849 came in from AutoZone. I fitted it in the truck and it matches the bolt pattern and opening. Things at work are killing my free time :pullinghairout:

Took an extra day off after getting home from family vacation to work on the truck. :upyes:

Got the powerglide transmission adapter installed and then bolted in the ACDelco 336-1849. I wired it up and hit the key.........................

It worked perfectly!

With the holes in the floor from the shifter and brake I could see and hear clearly. Nice smooth engagement and clean release.
