Gear Reduction Starter
 

Guys, first I would like to wish all a Happy New Year and hope everyone's Christmas was rewarding. I am looking for a Gear Reduction Starter and have made contact with NAPA and was given part number RAY 2441601 @ $184 but upon further investigation the bolt axis appears to be Vertical instead of Horizontal. I was also told that most any Small Block Chevy starter would work ... does anyone have any comments on that statement???? The take-off starter is 9 tooth, 5.51" c/c on the bolt holes and 3.23" limit of travel for starter gear. I am also not above taking a modifying a mounting plate if need be. If you want the correct gear reduction starter motor for your V6 then Bendtsens has it. www.transmissionadapters.com. The smallblock Chivy starter will not bolt up to your bell housing, only ones used in bigger truck applications with 366 and 427 V8 engines are compatible with the GMC V6.

Guys, any other suggestions? Thus far every avenue I have explored has been a "no can do". I keep coming back to changing the "adapter plate" to accomodate the GMC bolt pattern ... I know it may be problematic but unless anyone else out there had a better suggestion ...

I'm not sure you could even fabricate an adapter plate for the starter.

You have a K1500, so that should have a 305 or 351 in it (unless you put something else in) which wasn't a gear reduction as far as I know... I have a few motors out here and the only ones I have seen gear reduction were Chrysler products...

I'd say you could take a look at some of the Chevy starters, and remove the nose piece off of one and replace it with the nose piece off of your old starter, if that was an option (my neighbor did that in reverse, used one of my 305 starters and put his Chevy nose on it)

Interesting.
I just looked up that starter and it appears to have vertical -and- horizontal holes.

Looks, to me, like the solution to the "R" terminal issue would be to replace the solenoid (appears to be stock Chev...).

You may want to check out a Denso starter for a older dodge cummins. I used one in my bobcat skid steer a few years ago. It replaced the direct drive delco starter that was in it from the factory. All I had to do was open up the bolt holes a bit.

Thanks David, trust you had a safe & sound New Year celebration!! Here is what I'm thinking, in looking at a lot of these hi torque starters, those made by IMI in particular, they seem to have an "adapter plate" simply bolted onto the front of the starter body itself. One might be able to take that "plate" off and build one (thru a machine shop) with the proper bolt hole spacing and considerations on the starter body side. The only problem I see is finding such a starter body that has 1.6" of gear or sprag travel as measured from the forward facing surface of the bellhousing. This may well turn out to be a wild goose chase but nothing ventured nothing gained and IF I were successful in finding a combination that would work and still keep the cost around the $100 mark then we may all have found a nifty little starter fix for some of these V6s.
