Hi im new to the forum. Just wanted to say hi and to post a pic of my 63 1500. I just bought this on 12/12/2015. My grand father had one the same year and model as i grew up. I look forward to learning all that i can from everyone here.

So far she looks mostly origional. Split rims on the rear, oil bath air breather, i think rust also came standard on the midwest trucks . She was a farm truck and has her bumps and bruises however she sounds heathy. Guy i bought her from had rebuilt the carb. Im takimg to calling her sarah lee. The only problems i have so far are a rattle in the front when i hit a bump and that she has no tail gate.

Welcome to the forum, I agree with Ed and Jake. I might suggest that you look over Jolly's 6066 GMC Guy Page, there is a wealth of knowledge and it's still a reference that many of us who have been members of the forum find very helpful.

I cannot yet post in the market place so ill give it a try here...does anyone here know where i can source the cover for the heater core? Its missing along with the core. The fan seems to have multiple swich positions it how ever only works on one of the speeds?resister or the fan itself maybe?

Welcome aboard! Nice truck to start with. Any Chevy truck heater core or top should work on that(62-66 that is). As said, this site has tons of info on these trucks, especially the big block v6's.

Welcome to our forum! I notice you said that your truck has the factory original split rims, and if and when your tires wear out, those would be the first thing that I would get rid of since most tire shops (at least those that I've been to) no longer have the safety cages required when working with tires on split rims, and as near as I know, split rims have been outlawed by Federal Law. Outside of that, you've got a pretty decent looking truck in spite of the bumps and bruises you mentioned. Congrats on finding a true collectable GMC truck!

As far as I have been able to find there is no such law.
Split rims are still in use in many places. The problem is finding a shop that knows how to handle them. Our rims, 3 piece/locking, are just fine and as long as maintained will not cause a problem.

Split rims vs. one piece is kind of like drum vs. disc. Your preference (and parts availability) is the deciding factor.

For me, if I could keep my wheels split rims, I would do so. Except by the time I have paid for liner, tube, and tire I could have bought a one-piece wheel and tire... which then becomes cheaper the next time when all I need is the tire. All one needs to do is find a tire store that also services trucks, and/or farm equipment.
Just like I don't see a reason to replace the drum brakes. As long as you don't lock them up (and discs can lock just as badly as drum) the stopping will remain the same (simple physics, friction with the road doesn't change due to the brake).
