305A 2bbl conversion

Hey guys,

My brother-in-law has a '62 GMC 1500 that is going to the junk yard soon -- it's been sitting in the weeds behind his barn for 20 years. I'm pulling parts off of it that I think might have use (or value)

I think the 305D had a 2 barrel Stromberg WW carb. I'm guessing that this intake/carb will bolt right up to my 305A correct? Will I need to take the throttle linkage with me?

How will this compare to the 2 barrel Holley 500 setup that seems to be the more common swap?

You will need the linkage from the 305D, everything will bolt on, the Stromberg 2bbl will be a slight improvement over the 1bbl but nothing like the Holley 500:ahhhh:

Re: 305A 2bbl conversion

Was the Stromberg dual barrel the only difference between a D and an A? The chart says 20 more hp and 20 more ft/lb of torque when comparing the D to the A.

10% increase isn't bad for an afternoon swapping intake manifolds!

B

Edit: Okay, to be fair it's more like 8%, but still!

As far as I know that was the only major difference, the 305D came out mid year in 61 and it has been said many 305A's had been switched over to the 2bbl at the dealers in 61 because of the poor performance of the 1bbl. Net horsepower for the 305A was 125hp versus the 305D at 142hp so that is a 17 hp difference.

That one barrel carb on the 305A was the same one used on a Briggs and Stratton vertically opposed twin. lol! Not really, but close enough.

The 2 barrel will be a nice improvement, but the holley with an HEI and dual exhaust is better...and if that ain't enough get a magnum manifold and do a 4 barrel. :lolsmack2:
