Power Steering Conversion Kit Recommendation

After owning my 1965 GMC Suburban for almost 30 years now I have decided to go ahead with installing power steering --bad shoulders have really been the game changer. Truck has a 351M and has the proper pulleys along with an original Power Steering pump from a donor engine - I have an early 1970's 1/2 ton steering box withhoses ready for the install and now just need to purchase the mounting kit. I know there are different suppliers that have kits such as Rex and Captain Fab - but I would like to be pointed in the direction of the best choice by fellow GMC truck people. Also after the install did anyone notice a difference in the geometry in the steering linkage due to the steering box/arm being moved farther left of the frame due the mounting plate. From what I have read this caused a difference in left/right full turn ratios - that the proper way would be to cut/weld and graph a dimpled frame section from 1967 and later truck to the 65 frame. What are your thoughts? Thank you for your inputs. :goodjob:

I used a CPP kit but I didn't know about CaptainFab or I would have used his unit. I too read about the geometry thing but haven't noticed it or paid much attention. I love having power steering on this truck. Seems like you have everything set to go so have at it and give your shoulder a break (bad choice of words, huh?)

Re: Power Steering Conversion Kit Recommendation

Has anybody used the Power Steering Conversion Kit from POL (PerforanceOnLine)? Cost is $160.00. I would like to get a kit that is recommended by GMC users who have used them - people has mentioned Captain Fab, Rez and CCP - what is your choice?
Thanks Again, Cliff

Heard nothing but good results from the people that have used Captain Fab's conversion kits. I have the original power assist on my 64, might convert to the power steering box style later on when I do the truck one day.

Captain Fab is what I wound up using on my 65 Sub, am I am very pleased with how it integrates to our trucks. The install is simple, but more importantly is the geometry being correct.
I first tried CPP, and it was junk. Although I tried to modify it to work, it never made it any farther than the garbage can.

I agree! I bought the kit from CaptainFab and installed it with no problems. Here is a pic.

I used Captn Fab's kit and recommend it highly.

It was nice doing business with another hobbyist.

Hello to all,

can someone tell me the advantages of installing this system rather than finding an original system to install?

Thank you,

I know this is an old thread, but what power steering pump bracket did everyone go with; off the shelf, fabricated, other? I have captainfab's kit and the steering box, double groove crankshaft pulley. Think I just need the power steering pump and appropriate bracket to hold it.

Re: Power Steering Conversion Kit Recommendation

I used an original bracket. If you have access to an original bracket they look that hard to replicate.

i used the cpp kit with no problems, i have a 61 chevy panel truck that i plan to convert also, i will look into the captain fab kit. sounds like people are happy with it. i havent noticed any problems with geometry, it sure is nice to have the power steering, works great.
