64 gmc steering column issues

I have some serious flop in my steering wheel. needs lower bearing I'm guessing. horn does not work nor do the turn signals. I read somewhere that the 64 gmc uses 62 or 63 chevy column parts. is that correct? what parts do I need to order and where should I get them from to fix these issues? thanks

Semi-random question.... other than the flop in the steering wheel, does the vehicle track straight? Or does it drift to one side?

fairly straight. never paid much attention to it honestly. it's on a k10 frame with 33" tires

Id guess your upper bearing in shot or missing. Go to Jolly's site and read up on the troubleshooting the turn signal switch. The switch holds a the upper bearing. There was a guy in the "chevytalk" forum that sold rebuild kits for manual steering boxes. (I think he went by "Jalepeno")

I would take it the steering wheel off to make sure the hardware is tight and nothing broken. Ebay has some turn signal switch for sale.

Are the Chivy and GMC turn signals the same? Just curious. I have seen the cams advertised as for use in both makes.

go to "Jolly's 6066 GMC Guy Page" and read up under "turn signal systems"
1963-66 GMC used the same as 1963 Chevy trucks.
you may also need a upper bearing which may not come with a new switch. they are available at LMC, Brothers, etc.

Some of the components are interchangeable, some are not. I believe the turn signal cam is different for the GMC for years 63-66 and the turn signal switch is different for the GMC for years 64-66. See the LMCTruck parts:

Re: 64 gmc steering column issues

The LMC is somewhat tricky to read. 1963 is a tricky year.

The cam 34-0770 is for 63 Chevy and 63-66 GMC. The cam 34-0771 is for Chevy 64-66. This represents what I call the "new" style turn signal. The "old" style "cam" was used by Chevy and GMC from 60-62 but 60 is different than 61-62. 34-0050/51

The switch 36-0602 is for Chevy/GMC 60-62 (old style), 36-0603 is for Chevy 63 and GMC 63-66, 36-0604 is for Chevy 64-66

This info by Jolly and TexGMC is correct for switch and cam: "1963-66 GMC used the same as 1963 Chevy trucks."

...and the column horn parts are all the same Chevy/GMC 60-66. Except logo button.

Re: 64 gmc steering column issues

In posting the information about turn signal parts as listed on LMC website, I was just saying that the way they list the part numbers for 63 twice in the same list is tricky. 63 is always discussed here and sometimes confusing. Was confirming what was said and gave all 60-66 info for TS and for horns. All for future searches. Glad you got what you need.
