HEI conversion ?

I have a 1962 4wd Panel truck, actually a rescue truck. with a 305D V6 engine, i'm asking if there is a drop in HEI Distributor that will work on this motor without modification. I already know about pertronix and i do have a kit for that, but id rather have an HEI set up if i can. Thanks

Re: HEI conversion ?

There was a ebay seller called HEIDIZZY that was making drop in GM HEI distributors machined out of billet specifically for the GMC V6. HE seemed to drop out of eBay several years ago. There is another seller on ebay that builds GM HEI's with a smaller cap, not a retrofit as all the internals are GM HEI, I forgot his name, maybe someone else may know. As far as building a modified unit from a 231 V6 it's not that hard and all the info is on Jolly's 6066gmcguy.com site. I built the HEI for the 305 my pickup back in 1991 and now the same distributor resides in the 478M V6 in my truck today.

Points have worked for a 100 years. If you want HEI, go with what BBV6 said. A brand new genuine GM distributor, then modify slightly and make/have made/buy the bushing. Search on here to read all about it. There is a fellow member WE7X@aol.com who may still make the bushing. See our Performance/Jolly Tip.
You need a lathe and a drill.

Re: HEI conversion ?

I personally had rather have points/condensor. I had some bad experiences with the early HEI and how the placement of the engines (8-350) in the engine bay and no fender width dealt with me on back pain.

Yes, I still have a few of the Custom Spacer Bushings available.
