The engine ID number is almost always on top of the block, right in front of the passenger side cylinder head.

Jolly's site has lists of data from owners of various years trucks. Here's the list from 1964: http://6066gmcguy.com/GMC-vin-list-64.html. Some of the listings have engine serial numbers. If you look at the different years, you might be able to narrow down what year your friend's engine is.
