My Dad's one ton Suburban, which he bought new and has never been repainted, came from the Pontiac, Michigan, plant with body color behind the grille.

so far it looks like we have Black painted grill supports on a couple 60-61's Pete found and on Donny's 6500 series truck, and from what I can tell it appears that most of the 1000 series trucks from the 62-66 years seem to have body color grille supports. Not sure what the deal is about this difference between models and years, or assembly plant painting regulation differences, etc....interesting history to know in any case
