Remote possibility is the tank for standard 15" wheels got a tank sculpted for an underneath spare, but tank for optional 17.5" wheels was flat. Or my tank is just earlier before sculpted tanks were installed.
I'm attaching photos of the spares underneath both of my Suburbans. Note that the one ton Suburban has about a foot and a half of additional room between the rear differential and the rear bumper, so is not really relevant to the half ton Suburbans. The first two photos, though, show the spare under the half ton. The tire just fits between the gas tank and the trailer hitch. Note that the gas tank is flat on the back side, not sculpted. Not sure what size the tire is, but probably about 28" in diameter. Without a trailer hitch a bigger tire should fit.
