When I was in technical school, the rule of thumb was that if you could reach the oil level withthe tip of your little finger bent at the joint of the first knuckle, there was sufficient oil in the rear end. This goes for both front and rear axles. That being said, however, it was recommended that the oil level would be up to the oil fill hole, but there would be no danger of damaging the rear end with an oil level 1/2 inch below the oil fill hole.
