I believe the difference is the early chains are the type used on gears vs. the later chains are the type used on what I would call sprockets (ie. like a double bicycle chain). You can interchange them in the 305's as long as you have the right gear for the early chain or sprocket for the later chain. My 305 E had the early "gear type" when I opened it up, thus I believe it was changed along the way. I changed it to the "sprocket type".
