Re: manual steering box play adjustment?
That is the same part number Rock Auto has for the steering box. If you look at the RA site, you will see it is drop shipped from the supplier.
RA is a lot like Amazon in the fact that they are the order taker, many of the items you order come from the suppliers they represent. |

Re: manual steering box play adjustment?
Thanks for the leads, Guys... I guess the first trick will be to make some calls when i get back to the States... if no luck, I'll try the adjustment procedure. Sure seems weird that the 4x4 version is so much harder to find than the other, but I suppose it makes sense if there werent as many 4x4s made.

Re: manual steering box play adjustment?
Something has really changed since yesterday. When I checked Rock Auto for the steering box, it is now a you send in your box for repair and return, and the price has gone up to about $220.00.
Still seems to be the same part number for all models from 1960-66. I guess the availability of rebuildable cores and the lack of critical internal parts is becoming an issue. |

Re: manual steering box play adjustment?
I guess I could actually understand that.. if someone has a marginal box, and then orders a "rebuilt", pays the core and then decides to keep their "marginal" box as a spare, then pretty soon their rebuilt-already supply goes away. they are still an option for me, I just have to get home and pull my box first... but that disables my truck until I get it back, so will likely not do that until I get the truck to my own house, instead of my Brother's in Arkansas...
Thanks for that update... I'll book mark their page for reference anyway. |

Re: manual steering box play adjustment?
I have found one in stock with one of the suppliers for our trucks. Price is a bit higher at $300.00 with a $125.00 core charge. In their description they list a rebuildable core as one with no excessive play, makes you kind of wonder what they have available as parts. Like why would need a steering box unless it had excessive play?
If it were me and I had a CC, I would get one while it was available. |

Re: manual steering box play adjustment?
Hello all, anyone had to replace a manual steering gearbox lately? I have a lot of play in mine and am looking to replace it or have it rebuilt. I know this is an old thread, but I wanted to look for posts before asking the question. Seems the Larescorp rebuilt boxes are going for around $500 and is a bit much for me. The rest of my steering linkage and suspension is rebuilt. Saw this on ebay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/For-Chevy-G...0AAOSwiHZbDP5G
Any ideas/suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks! John |

Re: manual steering box play adjustment?
Your Ebay seller link would be $352.95, including the $125 core charge, with free shipping, plus your cost to ship them your core.
Rock Auto (search for 1965 GMC 1000, steering gear) shows a Lares 8010 for $323.79 plus shipping, plus your cost to ship them your core. Rock Auto also lists a Lares 18010 for $337.89, plus shipping, and apparently no core charge. (Best deal?) Another option would be to adjust yours to tighten it up as much as possible, and just live with the steering play that most of these old trucks are known for. Best of luck with your decision! |

Re: manual steering box play adjustment?
Another possibility would be to source all the parts ( both gears, bushings, seals, and gasket) and rebuild it yourself. Not a real difficult job if you have all the parts in hand, but finding everything might be a challenge.
