Exclamation how to change from oil canister to spin on filter?

I have a 1964 GMC v6 305E (3 on tree column shifting) 2WD long wheel base fleet side. Under the engine there is the oil canister that I have to unscrew, take down and then change oil filter, which is the car board based, then put everything back together.

The real question is, I am OK with the canister but I would like to switch over to the regular spin on metal filters. How am I able to do that????? Is there some kind of conversion kit that is out there??? I have checked lmctruck website and they don't offer conversion for the v6, only v8's. Need help. Please and thank you!

Hello and Welcome ejohn35,

Here is a great album for reference (not my album but thanks to it's creator);

http://6066gmcclub.com/forum/album.php?albumid=63

It shows the two different type of spin-on units.

Also shows what you can do to the canister type to make it easier to change the filter. (drill and weld on a drain plug to it)

I have a couple of Questions,
I have a 305E in a 1968 2500 4x4. What after market oil filter does it use.
Does the engine require the vent filter on the back of the motor, or will the filter on the valve cover work

In 1968 GMC switch over to a valve cover type breather/filter that has a hose and tube that attach to the bottom of the air cleaner. There is no filter on the back of the engine as it is permanently capped off with an expansion plug so there is no need for one on any 68 and later V6. As for the oil filter the most common was the shorter AC PF24 and then the longer AC PF30 which crosslinks to the Fram PH11. On my 68 K-2500 for more capacity with a 478M V6 I use a longer 7 inch Wix 51831 or NAPA 1831 Filter which is for hydraulic pump equipment but it is exactly an automotive engine filter. There are many variants for the spin on oil filter for the V6 and the good thing about is Pontiac, Buick, Oldsmobile, Cadillac as well as AMC/Jeep from the late 60's into the 70's all use the same or compatible oil filters with the GMC V6.

Arrow Re: Starter Motor for the 1964 305E V6

There is a starter motor for the 305E V6 on ebay that's for $85 and free shipping, in fact it is posted when you open up to this website you will just need to scroll right on the arrow.

Hello - Seems like you haven't got the response to your original question about an oil filter conversion setup that would replace your steel canister - in the mid sixties GMC changed some of their V6's - mainly the smaller Series of trucks to the spin-on type filter - you just need to find an engine/spin-on filter assembly and replace your canister assembly with it - they interchange with no problem with the right gasket. The spin-on adapter can be found on Ebay once in a while or hopefully someone on the forum here can help you out. Good luck with your truck! - This forum is a good source of information!

ejohn35,

I just opened the remote filter from rockauto, part # HY 291
price, not much, the receipt isn't in front of me. Simular to what
I had on a '70 Dodge 3/4t Camper Special. Rockauto.com.
