My Dad's one ton Suburban, which he bought new and has never been repainted, came from the Pontiac, Michigan, plant with body color behind the grille.
Thanks for sending this picture and info Ed!

so far it looks like we have Black painted grill supports on a couple 60-61's Pete found and on Donny's 6500 series truck, and from what I can tell it appears that most of the 1000 series trucks from the 62-66 years seem to have body color grille supports. Not sure what the deal is about this difference between models and years, or assembly plant painting regulation differences, etc....interesting history to know in any case

I have a few books on The history of GMC it shows them both ways but doesn't talk about why they did it or why they didn't do it I guess it comes down to what ever you like
Thanks for all the replies everybody I guess we've all learned something

I actually think the Black behind the grill looks better - especially against a chrome grille, just didn't think GMC ever did them that way, so now I'll have to ponder what to do when we paint the 66 Suburban. Solid body color behind the grill looks a little unfinished and more like someone just didn't know or didn't care to add the Black back on when they did their repaint (tons of hot rodded truck paint jobs for example) so I think I am leaning to do mine with the Black paint added now that I know some came that way and it would be "correct" to do it that way. Learned a lot from this group and threads like this over the years and like Donny, appreciate everyone's valuable input

Looks great.

I can't remember without researching back, lol, but did you go with the 478 Gas? Also curious to what Trans you went with.
