Hey guys, I know this is a truck forum and I do know about the vintage-vans and VCVC forums. I was hoping someone on here might be able to share with me some repair manuals or any info on the the I6 motors. I own a 1st gen 1966 GMC G1000 Handivan. At this time I'm not sure if if my van has the 194 cu in (3.2 L) I6, or the 230 cu in (3.8 L) I6. I'm just trying to drum up some reading material on these motors. If anyone has scanned or had digital info they are willing to share it is much appreciated. Thank you.

In 1966 it both 194 and 230 inline sixes were available in the G1000 van according to the Motors Truck Manual, Look for a VIN tag that may include the engine size.

Hi Thevolt, this is probably no help, but this is all I know after trying to find some accurate info about these engines quite a whle back since I have 2 of them.

The top number in the picture is on a pad just behind where the distributor mounts on an extra engine I have. Ignore the bottom number, it seems it is the vehicle VIN which I can't prove but maybe you can.

I don't really know if this is accurate, if I goofed or didn't understand correctly but here goes.

F-Flint, MI
10-October
25-25th of the month
BF-230 Cu. In. in 1968 BUT there was also a "BF" listed in a search for 1969 as a 250.

Now it gets weirder, supposedly a code cast into the block right behind the dipstick (no pic) is the date the block was cast.

This one, J 28 7, means
J- October-(10th letter of the alphabet and 10th month)
28-Day of the month
7-1967---BUT it could mean 1977 if it is a 250!

I have never found info on the number for the 230 that someone put in my 1955 GMC many years before I got it.

I am residing to the fact that someday when the heads come off then I will know for sure!

194 or 230 in your van should use all the same parts for maintenance. Don't have any printed info but this info came from online searches.

If it is OK with the folks on this forum I would dig seeing pics of your Handivan!

Welcome from the Black Hills, wish I could help!

I did find a free download .pdf file of the 1966 CHEVROLET truck shop manual (ST75) all 427 pages. I have it loaded on my iPad now for some good reading. If anyone wants the link to the file just PM me. It is however a large download at 650mb. Picture of the cover is attached.
