Default Couple questions regarding carb choice.

So, I'm debating between a 500 holley 2 barrel or a 600 edelbrock 4 barrel. I have a friend of mine who can machine the manifold to fit the 4 barrel, but I was wondering. Has anyone done the 4 barrel swap? Any difference over the 2 barrel? I do plan on putting in a HEI...I have a pertronix system for a straight 6 292 that I'm pretty sure will bolt right in. Was reading a thread about the 500 2 barrel and have heard a ton of good things about it, but I always like to take things over the hill. lol

I have converted two Magnum intake manifold to 4bbl but have yet to try one out. A few people have and it seems the best results are from the Edelbrock 500 cfm manifold, the 600cfm may be a bit much but hopefully someone else that's done one can share their experience. The 292 Pertronix will work as long as you have the same smaller distributor but I recommend an HEI for reliability and ease of the availability of parts as well as overall increase in performance.

I did find an HEI on ebay for like $400 at one time...I'll have to search for it. I put a 600 edel on my 292 6 banger in my 66, works fine and helped alot..also has hei and headers. I believe I have the smaller dizzy, I used my 292's neww set of points and cap and all fit fine.

There was a billet HEI distributor going for $255 on ebay from HEIDIZZY but I haven't seen his auctions lately, you can always use the Buick V6 even fire HEI and follow the conversion instructions on Jolly's site. If you feel the 600cfm will work that's your choice, considering the 305 does have larger ports and valves over a 292.

Is that a magnum intake? Which adapter did you use may I ask? Thanks for the help!

That is a Magnum manifold with just a 4bbl spacer bolted to it after the manifold was re-worked, my first build I did a spread bore to square bore adapter, here's a pic of the re-worked manifold without the spacer and the other with a spread bore adapter.

forget the edelbrock, put a holly street avenger 4bbl on it. i would stay around 500 cfm. i have taken off several new edelbrock carbs and put on hollys. wow what a difference. they are way too rich out of the box, you can buy a kit to tune them, but it involves taking carb apart, changing rods and jets. holly is much easier to ajust, the last 3 street avengers came out of the box adjusted very close, only small adjustments needed. spend the extra hundred for the holly.
just my opinion, but i think you will be much happier with the performance

Thanks Rick! I'll consider it fer sure. I already have an edelbrock 600 which is why I'm considering using it. Cool stuff....maybe I'll use a turbo to. lol
