Another thing to look at is the dollar savings. I crunched a few numbers and it looks like this. Time and labor, how much will you spend to gain 2 miles per gallon? That seems to be the most common increase written about here using various means. Going from 10mpg to 12mpg. Diff ratio change? Tranny swap? Larger tires? Dual exhaust?

For this scenario the numbers say that if you make one or more of these changes and then drive your *******' 305 for a thousand miles with that increased two miles per gallon of regular type gasoline. And considering $2.50 a gallon, average price at the pumps today (prices may vary by your location) your gasoline bill would go down from 250 bucks to 207 bucks for that thousand miles. A savings of $43.00

So maybe one question a guy might wanna consider is: How many miles would you have to drive to break even from the price you paid for those modifications?

so no-one on here has the eaton rear end that has the easily swapped third member? I swapped my one ton dump 5:? for 3:73 and gained 8 MPG and it cost me $50 for the third member that the wrecking yard had laying in the mud. The switch took 20 minutes, The same third member fits my 63 GMC 3/4 ton, 64 GMC 3/4 ton, my 64 Chevy 3/4 ton Factory fleetside dump, my 68 1 ton dump, and my 72 3/4 ton chevy catering truck. I leave it in my 68 1 ton chevy dump that also has a three speed brownie behind the 4 speed muncie, so I have few limits to the range and the whole set-up cost $200.
