Hello to the group,

I mentioned in a previous post I'm replacing my flywheel ring gear due to worn teeth. I called Napa again and they found the correct one.

Today, I was inspecting the old ring gear and starter and I noticed that the previous owner had flipped the ring gear over, as both edges of the teeth were worn. The starter seems to have excessive slack when I was testing it, which could be the cause for the worn teeth. However, I also have to wonder if this starter has the correct nose length. The starter has a reman sticker on it.

After I reinstall the flywheel I'm going to measure the flywheel to the starter mounting face of the clutch housing and compare that to the starter, to ensure I get the correct nose length.

Does anyone know what the length difference is between the short and long nose?

Thanks again for your assistance,

David

Your idea sounds like the best way to go. Take the solenoid off the starter and run the drive all the way out by hand. Then measure from the flange mounting face to the pinion.
