View Full Version : What is a Differential Carrier Gasket?

What is a Differential Carrier Gasket? It's showing up on Rockauto.com as a gasket for the differential. I know there's one in the front where the drive shaft goes (Pinion seal, that one took me forever to figure out a name for! :lolsmack:) and one in the back (Differential cover gasket) but the carrier gasket I cant seem to figure out.

google eaton HO52 and look at the images. once you see it it will make sense.

Ahh, so its the front seal, like opposite the rear differential cover gasket. Dana 44 doesn't have one of those though, right?

Right . Thats called a drop out third member. ford 9 inch is the same way and toyota trucks.

That style is very handy for changing gears. You pull the axles and driveshaft, and then swap out the center section with another with the ratio of your choice. You can set up gears on the bench I stead of under the vehicle.
When I worked in off road racing they would have 2 or 3 different ratios for each truck plus a spare in every ratio X $7000 for a new, complete unit= $$$$$. Then they have them rebuilt at least once a season.
