Can someone give me a heads up on where to buy vintage color paint? In this case i am looking for Chrystal Green.

The original paint was lacquer. You will find that impossible to buy in most states today. This forum has many of the original paint chips and paint codes from this era. Any automotive finishing supply warehouse can provide a polyurethane paint matched to the original paint chip or paint code. Also, if you have a original finish panel (cowl corner) that has been polished to original luster, they should be able to paint match to that.

I would have to say the original paint on these trucks was Alkyd Enamel and not laquer, Yes GM did paint passenger cars starting in 1957 with Acrylic Laquer but trucks stuck with oil based enamels. Though you won't get Alkyd enamel now a days, you can still find Acrylic Enamel or Catalyzed Acrylic Urethane. PPG paints is still pretty good with making formulas for older vehicles. Now if you live in many areas of California:ahhhh: and possibly other states that may be more stringent your choice may be limited to water base paints that are not formulated for earlier colors. Being a California resident I have found paint companies in other states that sell Acrylic Enamel online and will ship anywhere.

Based on how my tan faded in the sun. I thought it was lacquer... I stand corrected, thanks. I can still buy non-water base finishes in Cali. Most body shops in major population areas are switching to water based colors and poly clears due to VOC emission limits. I prefer PPG Polyeurothanes because the flow like lacquer paint (to me), and are very durable. Fritz should be able to get the match he is looking for.

Yes, I also still buy solvent based paints as they're called and locally for the most. As far as the VOC levels there are solvent based paints that are actually lower than water based paints. Valspar makes a basecoat & single stage that are lower and so does PPG under their Omni brand line.:thumbsup:

Fritz, go online to TCP Global to there restoration section and put in the year of your truck and of course GMC as the make. Chrystal Green will pop up on the PPG color chart and PPG's Delstar Acrylic Enamel will be the paint of choice. Delstar came around 1965 or so and just a few years after your truck was built so Formulas dating back for vehicles made in the 50's and early 60's were not a problem back then. The only difference from your original Alkyd Enamel finish is Delstar has an Acrylic additive in the formulation which makes it more durable and adding the recommended catalyst makes it far more durable and resistant to chemicals that can be spilt on it.:ok:
