I did the Holley Carb conversion on my 305e. for right now I have a Mr Gasket chrome air cleaner on it. It looks so out of place on that engine. It might as well be neon green :banghead: yuck

What air cleaner from the 60's or early 70's will fit?

I always liked the late 50's Batwing style and the dual snorkel style air cleaners. You may need a spacer with those.

Here's a few suggestions and what I have on mine for now.

One idea I've had was to take the stock GMC V6 air cleaner base , cut out the smaller 2bbl neck and mig weld another one from any other GM 4bbl air cleaner base.

Agreed, right now I'm leaning towards that exact idea.

Another idea I had for my 68 which came with the Donaldson Oil Bath air cleaner was I noticed some of the mid 70's GMC medium duty trucks with 366 or 427 V8 4bbl came with the same exact style air cleaner other than the fact that it had the larger base. If I ever go that route it will be mostly for display, I really like the amount of air the 14 inch K&N air cleaner takes in:woo:

I recall that a poster purchased a base from Speedway or JEGs that fit the 4 barrel and had the outer diameter of the stock air cleaner. That way he could use the stock air cleaner top with the aftermarket base. I haven't done this, but filed the idea away in my head in case I ever made this modification. Seems like you would keep your current look with this approach.

Hope that helps.

I bought a 13 inch Ford Mustang air cleaner from Summit and used just the bottom and the original GMC top. Looks stock and works perfect. 1966

I like the look of that top without a snorkel!

I used the stock top/snorkel on an open-element low profile base I got from Summit Racing. Uses a filter from a '67 SS 396 Malibu.
