Hello all,
I'm attempting to change my oil filter. It had a wix 51123 in it. So, that's what I've gotten for a replacement.
But, I can't get the gasket that came with the filter to work. It's too small. I've tried stretching it to fit. But, no luck. I've tried putting it around the outside of the metal housing and pushing it flush with the top of the housing. No luck.
The filter I got is on the list of known good parts. So, I'm a bit lost as to what to do?
Oh, I did make sure there's no old gasket left behind. I've messed around for 4 hours and all I have to show for it is kitty litter in the driveway and motor oil in my hair....

Hi JMClendon,

You should not have to stretch your O ring to make it fit. It may be that another buyer put the wrong gasket in the box and returned your filter. If the gasket does not fit in the filter's gasket crease I would return it to the store and ask to see another box to compare.

Have a great day and a happy New Year,

I had 2 shipped over. The gasket is the same size on both.
Has anyone else using a wix 51123 run into this problem?

I'm sorry, it looks like this is a problem reported by aphaynes. He also had this problem and created his own gasket from a roll of gasket material. I have updated the part numbers documentation to reflect this new information.

If you wouldn't mind, please send me your mailing address in a PM.

Have a great night,

-Jeannie

I am using the wix 51121 with no problem.
According to Wix web site http://www.wixfilters.com/Lookup/PartDetails.aspx?Part=171491 the wix 51123 gasket is too small.
And on the wix 51121 http://www.wixfilters.com/Lookup/PartDetails.aspx?Part=170901 the gasket is the right size.

I simply went with the wix lookup results that were returned when I provided it with the relevant data (GMC 1500). The fact that the 51123 was listed on the known good parts list on Jolly's website gave me some comfort as well.
Having said that, I'm actually glad to hear it's too small. I was starting to worry that I was doing something really stupid.
I'm heartened by the fact that you're using a 51121, as I can actually get one of them after only waiting 24 hours. The 51123 took 3 weeks to arrive.
Seriously, Mad Max could never happen over here. There's not enough decent parts stores to raid. 1 week in and we'd all be walking.

Legend!
The gasket from the 51121 is working.

Jmclendon,

You did everything right. Tapatalk should be pretty intuitive, but if you have questions I will be glad to help.

Keep an eye on the mail and have a great 2018!

Hello,
I should have checked here first. I just bought a Wix 51123 filter for my 1962 305. I haven't tried to install it yet. I guess I'll return it and get a 51121. Thanks for the tip.

IS this for the Spin on Adaptor type set up?

IS this for the Spin on Adaptor type set up?

I believed the spin on oil filter housing came out in 1967 to 1974. However if you can find an engine that has one, it will fit on the 60-66 engines. It come in two sizes, small and large, either one will work OK (just make sure the oil filter by-pass valve is still in the housing). Also to my knowledge there is no adapter that will fit the 60-66 engine oil filter housing to let it use a spin on filter. Someone in our group could verify this in case I am mistaken.

Actually the spin on filter assembly came out in 1966 but not all pickup trucks had it, I have a 66 351E that's out of a 66 1000 series with the canister type, by 1967 all pickups came with the spin on assembly. True there is no spin on adapter and I myself have mentioned that over a dozen times. Don't know why people keep calling these setups adapters that they are not!:pullinghairout:

Pete, it must be a matter of semantics. After over 40+ yrs in the business, I have heard parts called by everything BUT their proper name. Some times I just have to laugh it off!!:lol::toofunny::toofunny::toofunny::toof unny::toofunny::toofunny::toofunny::toofunny::toof unny::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:

Hello,
Sorry all..... It would appear that the spam filter for my email address was working a little too well.

IS this for the Spin on Adaptor type set up?

I'm not using a spin on filter.... It's a metal housing with a large bolt running through it and the filter just sort of hangs out on the large bolt inside the housing.

The 51121 gasket worked like a champ..... it also kept me from pulling my hair out LOL
