The engine ID number is almost always on top of the block, right in front of the passenger side cylinder head.
Jolly's site has lists of data from owners of various years trucks. Here's the list from 1964: http://6066gmcguy.com/GMC-vin-list-64.html. Some of the listings have engine serial numbers. If you look at the different years, you might be able to narrow down what year your friend's engine is.

If that's the Number on the Pad on the front of the block, then something is not right.
The possibilities could be: (mostly guessing here)
-A Rebuilt and Restamped Engine??
-A Canadian Engine ??
-An Off-Road Engine and that's the way they stamped them??
