I had the opportunity to buy an instrument panel from a heavy duty GMC that would physically fit in my 1965 C1000. The panel has a mechanical tachometer, and I would swap out my speedo. My question is this: does anyone know of a distributor for the GM 230/250/292 that supports a mechanical tachometer?

I have not heard or seen those but I found this company on the net. Seem to have been around awhile so they may know or maybe build you one for that purpose.

I have a Mallory distributor in one of my vehicles with a mechanical tach drive, so I know they make one for a Chevy. You could check to see if they have a listing for our GMC.

Mallory makes a few for sbc's, but if they made one for the 6 in the past, they do not now. Plenty of options for a Ford 292, but none for the good 292.

I'm also searching for a distributor for a 250 six with output to drive the tachometer.. Closest I have gotten is the 1953 and 1954 Corvette. They had a six with mechanical tach drive. Might be aftermarket stuff from the '60's still out there.. I would think that a big Chevy or GMC 3000-5000 with a 292 or 351 V6 would have the cable driven tach.. I'll keep looking. Those Corvette rigs are rare and expensive.. $500-1000.. Jeesh. Correction.. $2400 to rebuilt your core! https://www.ebay.com/itm/284128465108?chn=ps&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-117182-37290-0&mkcid=2&mkscid=101&itemid=284128465108&targetid=2315428264780&device=c&mktype=pla&googleloc=9190772&poi=&campaignid=21394550841&mkgroupid=173029507588&rlsatarget=pla-2315428264780&abcId=9448521&merchantid=101641758&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=21394550841&gbraid=0AAAAAD_QDh-H81KYOBIzOpyXjvBLWeM7h&gclid=CjwKCAjw9uPCBhATEiwABHN9K7ku3LxCpdPCjfyW2vQ2 TzFhNJvghHj5pWZWTNq64ih_nmu2Lz4sJxoCTUAQAvD_BwE

check with dakota digital. they may have a drive motor for the mechanical tach. they have them for cable driven speedos when using modern transmissions with speed sensors and cable drive speedo heads. or they may have an electical tach that will fit your gage cluster.
