I ordered a distributor cap and they sent the wrong one. They sent the large base with the little door for adjusting the dwell. I have the small cap version and the original distributor that came on this engine in 1964 305 V6( 1110317). Why is it nobody can source this. Do they all have it wrong? Anyone have a part number, I just want a black one that fits.
Thanks,
Steve

You're lucky you didn't get a 8 cylinder cap for a 305 General Motors product - I wouldn't buy a roll of electrical tape from Rock Auto - they are just order takers and the manufacturer/warehouses somewhere in the world - mainly China send what is in stock at the moment.

I saw both types listed (with window and small cap) and a photo of on the website under 1964 GMC 1000 for a 305 V6.

I also looked under 1968 and found this number ACDELCO D323R

To be fair I've had good luck with Rockauto - the parts in the picture being exactly what you get. Now you need to do a little research as not all the parts are listed right for our V6 trucks.
For a distributor cap, I've read somewhere that a 292 or other inline six uses the same cap. I've checked, looks to be right.

Good luck.

Your right Rock Auto only show the window type (according to the pictures they provided) for the 64. However the number you found seem to be the correct one base on several part web sites. Here is a google search results: https://www.google.com/search?q=ACDELCO+D323R&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

Today auto part company only know what the computer tells them. And it mostly for a 305 V8.:banghead: There again I always had part issue with old engines. 40 years ago I had worked on the 50s engines that wasn't even listed in their part books and I had to tell them what the number was. It got to a point they quit asking what I was working on and ask what part number do I need.:3gears:

I try to keep a record of all of the correct part numbers I have bought for my 64 in case I need to buy another one. I have bought a lot of wrong parts for my truck, mostly because the information they provide is not enough to know if it will works.

My truck is a little different:
I converted the brakes system from drum to disc using newer stock (1980-82) and aftermarket (brake lines, hoses, and fittings) parts.
Bullet HEI Distributor.
Holley 2 Barrel Carburetor with a custom made adapter (tried the cheap universal one and it is junk).

I replaced mine in 2021 from oreillys #DR428. They came with brass terminals in
side the small cup. The brand is "Standard"

Steve, i have ordered a number of parts from rock auto and never gotten a wrong part. i look at the picture of what i am ordering to compare it to the original part. if it looks like the original, then buy it.

My son and I both have ordered from Rock Auto many times over the years and never had any issues.

The whole distributor thing is confusing. Rockauto not to blame. This thread will explain and is from the gurus here on 6066 Club. (and that is not me).

If you will go to my post on the thread "gmc v6 ignition question", i give the answer there about when the distributors changed.
