Hello: I am in need of a transmission pilot bearing for my 432 V6 and 5-speed. Since I could not easily find a 478 flywheel, I had a 401 flywheel balanced to work on my 432. I went to my local parts house to find a needle bearing or bushing, but I am not having any luck with the dimensions I gave them. Anyone have a source for this or will I have to get it made? The dimensions I have are; 0.985 ID, 1.355 ID, and 0.755 in length.

Thanks in advance, Jim Mx.

Hello Jim,

Are you sure the OD is 1.355" and not 1.378"? To my knowledge, all bearings used in these trucks are of a metric size.

1.378" is 35mm
.985" is 25mm
.755" is about 19mm

I can find bronze bushings with a 35mm OD and 25mm ID. These can be easily machined to the right length.

For my 478 flywheel, it had a rather larger pilot bearing for a large truck trans. Since I went with the SM420 I made a pilot bearing conversion sleeve to accept a standard 6202 bearing, used on the 305 flywheel. That sleeve was pressed into the flywheel.

You're using the big truck trans in your pickup project?

Thanks for the quick reply. I am somewhat new and did not know the bearings are metric. I could have mismeasured the bore of the flywheel. Time to head for the parts house and see what they can come up with. Yes, I am using a big 5sp for my '62 1 ton pickup.

I said 1.375" but meant to say 1.378".
1.378" x 25.40 = 35,0012mm
