View Full Version : Carb replacement 1965 GMC 305

This will be my first post. carb had been rebuilt when I got the truck, it’s leaking, went to remove the oil pan - seems like someone did some welding by connecting the oil pan to the mouth of the carb. That may be one of the dumbest things I've ever seen. I'd probably get a sanding wheel for my drill or my grinder and just sand that weld aloose a little at a time then try to smooth everything out.

Regardless, it's going to have to get off there.

Don't forget to close the choke so dust can't enter the intake.

Yep, cosmically dumb!
It would be nice if the pan doesn't make it impossible to remove the carb.

Looks good! A lot of extra work to overcome the doofus welding.

Dumb question (which I think I asked in another thread): With what looks like a single bore master cylinder, is that an auto trans or do later trucks have mechanical clutches.

The master cylinder in the picture is the standard single pot master cylinder. Starting in 64 they went to this master cylinder and a mechanical clutch.

If you have not thought about this already, you might consider modifying the breather to take a dry paper element vs. the steel wool oil bath? Its super simple, just remove all the top housing with a Dremel tool type cutter, leaving the just the top lid. I did that and she still looks like an oil Bath type cleaner.

I did the 2-barrel swap to a Holley 500CFM carb, so the diameter was different, I made a foundation for the lower pan to rest on. If you need any help, ask away.

I thought about that, I would actually prefer it. What I couldn’t find was - how to reroute the oil breather hose that comes in on top of the oil pan

That oil breather hose that you have is definitely not stock. A 1965 model should have the PCV valves under the valves cover, not a road draft tube. Where is that hose connected to?

Possible the lid of the oil filter is not original as well.
