Chrome trim body holes removal

Restoring a ‘66 fleet side. Do not want to put the chrome trim back on so need to fill the holes in the body. Any suggestions on best way to do this?

Clean - weld - grind smooth.

If you are not aware of it, one tip to help with welding holes shut, is to put a copper bar behind the hole, as a backstop. It will help keep you from burning the hole a lot bigger, by mistake; and the wire/rod will not as easily stick to the copper.

You can make the copper welding backing spoon or buy one from Harbor Freight/eBay/amazon, etc. You can cut and flatten a piece of copper pipe as well if you have some handy

You put the copper behind where you're going to weld up and it keeps the hole from getting melted and bigger

This copper thing is genius. I never heard of such a thing and could have used it when I was burning holes like swiss cheese in my log splitter.

I would have said just fill it with body filler and sand it down, but welding it is much more permanent.

The copper tool sounds good but am not able to get behind to place it. (photo).
Has anyone suggested brazing the holes using an acetylene torch, or does it need to be mig welded?

It is possible to use a torch, but controlling the heat is very difficult, and can easily lead to significant warping.
You might want to consult a body shop or two, and get an estimate from a Pro.
If there is a custom body shop/hot rod shop in the area, they might be able to do it, or suggest somebody who still does real metal work, and just not cover stuff with filler.
At least you would know what the options, and costs may be.
One thing that can be done, is to dimple the hole slightly, so it is below the intended surface, then weld it and grind it down to flush. After that, you will just have a low spot to re-surface. No matter what, you will have some body work to re-finish.
