I'm looking at getting an AR and wondering if the juice is worth the squeeze.
I've had a pistol for personal protection for a while now, and a hunting rifle, but I'm getting an itch for one. Torn between building my own or getting something classic like the Colts.

I must be mistaken I thought this site was about GMC trucks and not weapons used to murder folks in masses ?:pullinghairout:

Its in the "other builds and projecs" area. It's not a truck, so I thought I'd ask here.
Also, why am I murdering folks in masses? Is that a requirement?

This reminds me of the controversy over your log splitter, Fetch! I know of at least one guy who quit the forum over that one. More power to you in my opinion.

Cars and trucks have killed as many people as guns.

Don't see anything wrong with the post Fetch.

While I (briefly) fired and handled the military version, which was Colt, I don't think that any particular manufacturer is "better" than any other in these. Just personal preferences and what feels comfortable to hold, aim, and fire. And of course consider maintenance, does it come apart easily, for instance.
I have recently gotten into black powder, and although my funds are not high enough to have all I want, I have a Walker Colt replica and an unknown piece. The Walker was bought after holding several different types and I liked the way it felt (a bit heavy). The unknown one is a single shot, it gets laughs more than anything else, but it was a gift.
If you can, find a place that has several manufacturers of the AR-15 platform and see what feels good.

No faster than any other rifle or pistol for that matter. Its just a more common and often reasonably priced.

YOU WILL LIKE THE AR. most brands are pretty good, i have several. ihave a 5.56 colt, shoots well. rock river is really good, great quality, better trigger than the colt, they are a little heavier, but great quality. one of my favorites is my sig sauer MPX. it shoots 9mm. not any good for hunting, but cheap to shoot if your just plinking.

Fetch's post IS in the correct location. From his other posts, I know of him to be a family man, posting helpful content and with added humor too. He's a funny guy!
So, while not a topic of my interest, I did click-on to "check it out" as a new post. I found it was not my cup of tea, so nothing to add other than my first line.

Thanks guys!
People like different things, and I always thought it was best to join in on what you like and ignore what you don't. Calling someone a murderer or killer for having a hobby (aside from playing around) is not the way to act as a grown man. We're all friends here.
David and ilvracn, thanks for the advice! That MPX sounds very interesting. No having to stock multiple calibers. I'll take any other questions to another forum.

I shoot too. I'm a licensed gun owner in the Netherlands. I shoot black powder exclusively. I am a sucker for Colt single actions, I've repaired and retimed most of them.
Some of the firearms I own (and have shot):
Colt 1849 Pocket from 1853
Manhattan Firearms .36 revolver from 1860
Colt Single Action Army from 1911 in 38-40 Winchester
Colt 1851 Navy 2nd generation replica (.36)
Colt 1860 Army replica
Colt Single Action Army replica in .45 Colt
I have a Hawken rifle replica but rarely shoot it.
I still want to get a nice lever action rifle. Would be sweet to have an original Winchester 1873 in 38-40.

I'm sorry for your loss. I think at this point most people have lost someone they loved or someone they knew to terrorism. For us it was just last year at a Chiefs game. A good friend of the Little Blonde was injured by an animal that never should have been let out of jail (<br><font color='red'>To view some links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. This is the reason I carry and why I shoot (I also have a big family that loves deer steaks). It's just a tool, and it beats throwing rocks at deer.
More importantly, if I don't protect my family members, who will?
Whatever side of the fence you fall on, I hope none of us here ever have to deal with losing a friend or family member to terrorism again.

I have an original Winchester 1894 in 38-40. I have not had the chance to load some ammo for it though. I'm still trying to figure out the logistics on components.
Shooting is fun. I was a youth firearms instructor when I was 18. Did precision rifle shooting in high school. Got my CCW at 19. Shot a TON while I was in the Army. I even make my own ammo in my home office.
I've got way too many guns to list. Working at a gun range as an instructor meant that I got to see good deals and odd firearms all day, everyday. But some of my favorites are:
-Bushmaster AR-15 (First gun ever purchased)
-M1 Garand (Markings are inconsistent, but I believe it to be a 1945 model that was refurbished in 1965 by Anniston Army Depot. I only use my reloads in this gun; no factory ammo)
-M1903 (Sporterized in the 1960s. Lots of fun, and not a bad hunting rifle)
-Marlin 336 from 1963
-Colt Super Wrangler chambered in both 22mag and 22lr
Pepsi, my advice to you is to visit your local indoor gun range. See if they have any ARs to rent and try some out. You'd get to try different calibers, styles, attachments, optics, etc. If nothing else you can just buy a cheap one and go from there. Bushmaster XM15, Sig MPX, S&W M&P15. All good guns.
