It's a 67 305E. The crank case breather port is plugged by a Casting Plug. On Page 1 Post 3 of this build you can see a pic of the stock setup somewhat. The air cleaner has a hose that hooked to the valve cover via a cap with a hose port.

That sounds more like the 68-74 setup. The 67 305E still had the tube running from the back of the block to the air cleaner. In 68 it was capped off in the back of the block and the breather on the right side valve cover had a breather with a hose and tube to the air cleaner.

Interesting, If I remember right the original intake manifold was stamped with a 67 year. I'll have to look again.

You can't always go by the casting date:pullinghairout:, that does give you a ballpark figure on the year, though it could have been cast in the fall of 1967 which would make it a 68. The only person that's good at figuring the year of these V6 engines is Lewis Matkin. I gave him several different engine ID numbers that were stamped not cast on the right front side of the block and he got them all correct. One of them was the block to my 478 that I had thought was a 71 but turned out to be a 68 same year as my truck:upyes:

Ah ok, I'll see if I can get some numbers. 67, 68 I don't care....I just like to say I have the engine with the extra 10 hp. LOL!

Most likely the fact that your 305E came with the breather in the valve cover rather than the back of the block would make it a 68 unless someone prior capped off the hole in the rear of the block and changed the valve cover. Lets compare engine ID numbers, the 305E that came of my 68 is #305E 497570, get me the number off yours and I'll send it to Lewis to see what year he comes up with.

My 305E did Not come with a breather in the valve cover. I put that breather there from my 292 when I converted to a 4 barrel setup so I didn't have to drill in the air cleaner. The stock setup had a hose running from the air cleaner to cap with a hose port on the valve cover. :ok:

305E 49292I

Date stamped on the original manifold is 10-17-67 so probably a 68 like you said.

This is what is considered a breather cap with a breather tube for the air cleaner used on 68-74 V6 engines.

Hmm, that's not it either. Best I can provide is a video. If you pause it right at 23 seconds into the vid you can see the setup mine had.

That date would definitely put it as a 68 built in the fall of 67. The breather tube attached the oil cap was definitely an add on. Someone probably tossed the original setup away. I was fortunate to still buy a new one for the 68 while parts were very plentiful for these engines. I ended up rebuilding the cap by prying off the crimped bottom part and replacing the old steel wool that is used as the filter with new steel wool then having the cap chrome plated to match the valve cover. The pic of the other breather that's black I picked up on ebay several years ago:upyes:

Figures. lol Well a buddy of mine has that old setup on his now. I will figure a better PCV system soon. This one tend to throw some oil. lol Not a lot, but enough to have to wipe off the one valve cover.
