I thought the Wichita mini-meet attendees might like a preview of my Dad's 65 one ton Suburban which he'll be driving to the meet.

Re: Mini-Meets/Get-Togethers

That's a beast Ed! I like those bigol tires, the dual spot lights, and.......are those the original side windows?

Ed Snyder May 3rd, 2014 07:49 AM

Re: Mini-Meets/Get-Togethers

If I remember right, Foley, the front tires are 12 x 16.5 and the rears are 12.50 x 16.5. Dad had to have the rear wheel openings enlarged to accommodate them. Darryl Starbird's shop in Wichita did that work as well as some of the work converting the rear opening from doors to liftgate/tailgate. If you're not familiar with Starbird, see http://www.darrylstarbird.com/starbird.htm.

I don't remember how Dad managed to find the Young Windows company in 1965, but I see they're still in business: www.youngwindows.com. Dad designed the custom made windows to match the angle of the B pillars. I remember them arriving at the house in a wooden crate. He and I worked on converting the panel into a Suburban with 4 rows of seats to accommodate us 9 kids.

A little more about it: Dad ordered it with almost all the options available at the time -- custom trim, power steering, power brakes, front bumper guards, clock, tach, no-spin rear end, and probably more than I'm forgetting. I think the spotlights were dealer-installed. Before he took delivery, he had the dealer swap out the 305E for a 351C. He also installed an auxiliary 20 gallon saddle tank. The tallest rear ratio available in the 2500 series was a 4.56, so he had an overdrive box installed to drop that to about a 3.4 ratio for better highway cruising.

We went on lots of vacation trips in it, pulling a 24' Avion travel trailer, going to the mountains in Colorado or back to New York to visit relatives. Dad had the truck/trailer combination weighed one time on a truck scales -- about 12,000 pounds. Good memories! I guess that means I've been a fan of the V6 for almost 50 years now.

That's so cool! What great memories... (even if there was nine kids... LOL)

Hope this message works, I have had issues in the past......

I want to thank Ed for more or less getting this Mini-Meet promoted.

I have committed to work/help at a car show the place I work at is hosting on Sat. the 21st. Awards are given out @ 3pm. Debating on staying in Topeka or Wichita Fri night. Really depends on what time I get out of St Charles. 5 hours to Topeka, 7 to Wichita. I am hoping to be out of Car Show by 5...... We shall see.

Also debating on what to drive..... 78 GMC gets 6-8 mpg Family car gets 28-32. 850-900 miles round trip.

Never mind about the debating..... Even though I love showing off the 78, the 80 gallons of fuel difference has made up my mind. But I will bring pics!!!!!! LOL

Looking forward to seeing some old friends and hopefully making some new ones!!!!

Pics vs 80 gallons of gas, that's no contest! Hopefully the Powder Puff and I can make it, even for pics. You should see about trying to post them pics on here too Rusty so everyone can see. I made a video about doing it here. :giggity:

See you there!

Ed caught my typo/brain fart. I am planning on staying SAT night NOT FRI night in either Topeka or Wichita depending on what time I get out of St Louis.

Re: Mini-Meets/Get-Togethers

You need to get rid of that gas-guzzling 78 GMC, Rusty, and get an economical V6 to replace it. Set up like Rick Rusconi's 62 (lightweight half ton short bed, 3.08 gears, overdrive trans) you could easily double your mileage.

Re: Mini-Meets/Get-Togethers

Hey All....

I thinks so far we have 5 or 6 committed to attend.

I am needing to start making reservations/plans.

I believe the park shelter is reserved from 10-4. What time are folks wanting to meet @ the park? I am planning on grilling burgers & brats. What time should we plan on eating? How late are folks planning on "hanging out"?

Once I get a better idea of what time folks are wanting to get together and what time they want to be "on the road home" will help me with my hotel reservations.

Looking forward to another "Mini-Meet".

To all others who haven't committed.......

If you there is anyway you can make it to Wichita please do so!!!!!! Don't think you have to drive your truck. Fly in, drive in, **** hitchhike if you have to.

I will refer back to the original post. It is a great way to meet "good folks" who share a common interest.

Take Care ALL!!!!!

Re: Mini-Meets/Get-Togethers

Hard to nail it down Mr. Rustynut but I'd say people will drift in maybe 10:30 - 11:00ish? But when you start grillin' they will come!! Then we can eat and hang around early afternoon kicking tires and tellin' lies. We will be traveling and so I don't know the exact arrival time. But I'll have the brownies on the table by grillin' time. The only thing I'd ask for is an address for this park? Tks. Foley.

Ed Snyder May 16th, 2014 08:04 PM

Re: Mini-Meets/Get-Togethers

I've posted a link to the park before. If you go back a couple of pages, you should be able to find it. Just click on "Map" on that site. The parking lot for the park is really easy to find. From US54, take the Maize Road exit and head south. When you get to Pawnee, turn left (east). The parking lot is on your left before you get to the end of Pawnee.

My brother sent this link to the house which is right next door to the parking lot:

Fetch.....

July 12th????? You show up then you'll probably be the only one there, I thought the plan was June 22nd.

Foley (and others)... I will plan on having the meat portion of lunch ready for consumption @ 1230-1pm.

Beween now and then need a solid head count.

Re: Mini-Meets/Get-Togethers

Time's a-wasting, Fetch! The meet is definitely Sunday, June 22nd. Get those hubs put back together ASAP! The rest of us are counting on you and Powder Puff to be there.

Rusty -- although the "official" times are 10 AM to 4 PM, since these meets tend to be pretty informal, you can bet people will drift in and out at various times. I doubt if too many will show up early though. Hopefully everyone's there by noon at least. I wouldn't be surprised if there are still a few of us hanging out well past 4 PM.

Re: Mini-Meets/Get-Togethers

This sounds like a fun weekend. It would be nice to meet some of the members.
I haven't asked the wife what she has planned for then, but maybe we could drive up.
Would my '46 V12 Chemmy be welcome? If so, we might trailer it up. (Avatar) I've never taken it to any show yet. Had several visitors come to our farm shop to visit it, tho.
We live about 250 mi. s/w of Wichita on Hiway 54
We would come up to near Wichita the day before, spend the night so we could be there earlier the 22nd.

If a Kitty is being made up for misc. expenses, please post address, so we could submit a donation to help.
I'll be watching this thread to see how things come together. Hope it works out.

RustyNut May 18th, 2014 04:28 AM

Re: Mini-Meets/Get-Togethers

Cayoterun,

Of course Avatar would be welcome!!!!!! I have seen pics/videos on the internet and would love to see it in person.

Please don't consider this a "show". It is nothing of the sort. These "Mini-Meets" are nothing more than people who share an interest getting together.

As far as a "kitty" contribution. Really no need. As far as I know its kind of a "pot luck".... bring what you can. I m planning on grilling burgers and brats for all that attend, and others are bringing snacks and sides.

Hoping to meet you & Avatar next month.

It's a little rough, but definitely has potential. Pete took a few photos, so if you want to see them, send me a PM with your email address.

Re: Mini-Meets/Get-Togethers

Hey Folks,

Date is less than 2 weeks away. Hopefully you know if you'll be there are not. I cannot emphasise enough that everyone should try (no matter what the distance) to make arrangements to attend. It is a great way to meet "good" folks that share a common interest and put a face to the name with the guys that post here. Do not feel obligated to bring your 60-66.

With that being said, was hoping to come up with a menu. So far I have committed for burgers and brats. Foley has committed to a Brownie dessert. Who else is willing to bring what? I could make a pasta salad (oil/vinegar not mayo based) as a side unless someone has another option.

As far as refreshments I am recommending bring what you plan on consuming.

It is time to figure who's bringing what and figure out how much they should bring.

Take Care All & Looking Forward to another Mini-Meet.

Hey Rusty --

Awhile back Clarke said he'd bring charcoal fluid and watermelon, and Nate said he'd bring chips. Unless you've got another suggestion, I thought I'd bring a vegetable tray and disposable stuff like paper towels, plastic forks, etc. Your pasta salad sounds good too.

Yes, I'm bringing charcoal, lighter fluid and watermelon.

Hey Guys/Gals,

Cayote:

Do you think you are gonna be able to make it? Your "Avator" and Ed's dad's "survivor" would definately make great "Center's of Attraction".

Fetch:

Do every thing you can to bring "PowderPuff", but if you can't come anyway.... I've been to at least 10 of these "Mini-Meets" and only brought a 60-66 once. (A recently purchased '65 that I was driving home from California & I stopped by Jolly's 10 year Wing-Ding.

All others:

Do what you can to attend....... It is a great way to meet great folks that all share a common interest.

Rusty: We just learned a son of ours who works overseas and wife will be here. He's only in the states once a year, so want to spend as much time as possible with them.
Wish we could be there, but maybe next time.

Re: Mini-Meets/Get-Togethers

Hey Guys/Gals,

I probably wont be getting into Wichita till 11 or 12 Saturday night so to simplify/reduce condiments needed I am planning on grilling brats only. Another advantage of brats only is they are MUCH easier to keep warm for extended periods of time with drying out and turning into leather/cardboard. I will bring the buns and toppings. I normally top with onions (cooked or raw), kraut, mustard or 1000 Island. If anyone would like any additional toppings let me know.

Also, instead of pasta salad I will be bringing a German (Oil and Vinegar base) Cole Slaw.

I will plan on having brats reading 12:30ish but can easily keep them warm til 3 or 4.

Hopefully we can have a true head count by Thursday so that folks can estimate how much of whatever the volunteered to bring.

Take Care ALL!!!! Looking forward to seeing you folks!!!!

Well the Powder Puff and I have an update. Barring a miracle I don't think we'll make it this time. We got all our ducks, but none of them wanna line up. Cecilia's engine isn't stable enough for me to feel comfy taking her that far away. If that wasn't enough of a bummer, The Blonde got called in this weekend to work so I'd be dragging three little crumb crunchers along with me.

Hopefully the next one will see us in better shape. :(

Powder puff is not happy. She was playing dress up with her sister when she heard the news. I softened the blow by telling her we'd get Cecilia running better then taking a few smaller trips that are closeby like grandparents and such (hour to three hours). Take a lot of pics guys! We're there in spirit
