Thanks for sending this picture and info Ed!

so far it looks like we have Black painted grill supports on a couple 60-61's Pete found and on Donny's 6500 series truck, and from what I can tell it appears that most of the 1000 series trucks from the 62-66 years seem to have body color grille supports. Not sure what the deal is about this difference between models and years, or assembly plant painting regulation differences, etc....interesting history to know in any case

I have a few books on The history of GMC it shows them both ways but doesn't talk about why they did it or why they didn't do it I guess it comes down to what ever you like
Thanks for all the replies everybody I guess we've all learned something
And yes I'm still having fun :signthankspin:

Re: 1962 Gmc dump truck

I actually think the Black behind the grill looks better - especially against a chrome grille, just didn't think GMC ever did them that way, so now I'll have to ponder what to do when we paint the 66 Suburban. Solid body color behind the grill looks a little unfinished and more like someone just didn't know or didn't care to add the Black back on when they did their repaint (tons of hot rodded truck paint jobs for example) so I think I am leaning to do mine with the Black paint added now that I know some came that way and it would be "correct" to do it that way. Learned a lot from this group and threads like this over the years and like Donny, appreciate everyone's valuable input

Looks great with the Dump Bed on there.

It's cool to see a great example of what my '62 looked like when it was new. I didn't start driving it till '71.

I notice that you have 5500 Emblems on it though.

Ain't it a 6500?

Donny October 2nd, 2016 10:00 PM

Re: 1962 Gmc dump truck

Thanks Bill
Yeah I found that 5500 on the eBay brand-new NOS
I only have one 6500 that I had re chromed
Still looking for another 6500

BillT October 3rd, 2016 12:08 AM

Re: 1962 Gmc dump truck

I'll let you know if I see one.

The 5500 Emblem is pretty rare.

It will be worth something to the right person when you find it's replacement.

Finally got all the vibrations fixed today
Truck had a terrible vibrational about 45 MPH , had to shim number three axle
It's amazing how much the airbag height changes is the pitch of the two differentials
I got her up to 62 MPH today felt like I was doing 100

Funny you mention 62 MPH. That's the exact number that my '62 6500 topped out at. Back then and on the roads I was driving on, it was plenty enough. I also drove that truck during the "double nickel" days back in the '70's that was enforced by the government. But they let trucks and buses go 65. It was strange passing cars like crazy, in that big 'ol heavy truck, lol.

Donny October 3rd, 2016 01:36 AM

Re: 1962 Gmc dump truck

I Can't remember how fast my 62 Jimmy went back in the 70s
But these trucks came with 707 gears , I put Eaton 402s diffs with 614 gears
Does about 60 at 2500 it's actually perfect

Re: 1962 Gmc dump truck

It's a pretty cool experience cruising in a big truck, lol.

I used to cruise in my '67 7500 now and then.

Another day I took the '71 9500 Tandem that I used to drive for a cruise. I was down by a quiet part of the ocean to pick up a load of lumber and decided to stop for coffee first. Although there weren't no coffee shops to stop at. I turned it into to a 20 minute ocean side cruise instead. Enjoyed it a whole lot more than if I had the coffee, lol.
