Alan do you have any pictures of those trucks?

Re: 1972 gmc steel tilt cab with a 637 v8
637v8, would you consider doing a short You-tube video on this truck? I'd love to hear what it sounds like. Lots of V6 and V12 trucks on You-tube, not so many 637 V8s.

Re: 1972 gmc steel tilt cab with a 637 v8
Looks like it was a fire truck, I think it says "Perth Fire" something on the door? Has it been in the family a long time? Great truck with a cool engine!

It was a fire truck but the body was so badly rusted we couldent even open the compartments and the pump was cracked. The guy we bought this from bought it in 2003 and the drove it right back into a field where it sat untill 2007 when we bought it.we are the 3rd owner!

Re: 1972 gmc steel tilt cab with a 637 v8
637 cubes and look at that tiny carb... WOW!
I wonder if anybody ever these engines in the hotrod world? |
Re: 1972 gmc steel tilt cab with a 637 v8
I'll echo the rest of the guys, you've got a real neat truck there. A 637 's gotta be a real conversation piece, especially at the parts house! :goodluck: You've given us a few pictures and details but you got me wanting more. How about the specs for the rest of the truck? You said it has a "whacky" 5 speed, which one? I see a compressor for the air brakes. With that engine and the tilt cab I wonder what kind of weight you carry on the front axle? (cuz I wonder about stuff like that, doesn't everybody?) It was a fire truck in it's past, what are the plans for it's future?

Re: 1972 gmc steel tilt cab with a 637 v8
Just LOVE that engine! It idles so smooth. Single exhaust yes?
Thanks for posting the videos. A few requests; Can you post a photo of the emblem and does it say 637 V-8? Would post a close-up photo of the black engine family sticker on the passenger side valve cover? This is such a Kool Truck. Thanks again |

Re: 1972 gmc steel tilt cab with a 637 v8
Hey, Thanks for the you-tube videos! That truck does sound a lot like the V6 and V12; I thought that the 60 degree V8 would sound different.
By the way, nice Ford pickup in the background also! Dave Boboltz, Waterford, MI K1002 305E wideside |

Re: 1972 gmc steel tilt cab with a 637 v8
Glad to see all the interest in the 637 V-8. I used to drive a GMC 9500 Conventional Cab with a 637. It had the same Emblem on the side of the hood as pictured here on page 2.
It probably took me a good 35 years till I finally saw another (in pictures) Conventional Cab with a 637. They are pretty rare, but what made my truck extra rare was that it had a 10-Speed Road Ranger Trans. Till this day I've never seen another. The truck was a 20 Ft Tandem Axel Flatbed Dump. It had 12 Fronts and 34 Rears with a GVW of 46,000, Air Brakes, 10-20 Tires with Spoke Wheels. Fun truck to drive. Bill |

Re: 1972 gmc steel tilt cab with a 637 v8
I do see this is an old thread, projects like this are few and far between.
How is the project going? I live in middle 4th and our fire dept has one very similar still in use and is by far not the oldest one. Also I have a cousin who is in his 70's is a chief at volunteer dept and has his own pump engine, it as well is very similar. I haven't had the pleasure of looking at them in detail, now I shall use this as an excuse to stop by the fire hall and take you some pics. The one the city still uses if I ain't mistaken is powered by a screaming Detroit diesel 2 stroke. Wow, how I would have to eat those words if I'm wrong as only an idiot can mistake that wonderful noise! Sent from my VS500PP using Tapatalk |
