Re: Big truck dash
Looks good. Sure brings back memories. I had that dash in my '62 GMC 6500 although it had a Tach Delete insert.
Not sure exactly what you have there, but my smaller gauges were Air, Oil Pressure, Water Temp and Fuel. |

This is what you use to build a custom gauge set for you light truck, its covered on the website, Custom GMC Instrument Cluster, and shows the one I built for my 1965 2500, but it will most likely end up in the Rescue Squad now.
When building one for a pickup you need to make sure you have the 100 mph speed-o, some of the bigger trucks have one that only foes to 80 mph. |
Re: Big truck dash
Jolly, I believe my '62 6500 Speedometer only went to 80.

Re: Big truck dash
Hey Bill, this has vacuum, water, oil, temp
|
Re: Big truck dash
I never saw a Vacuum gauge before in a '60 to '66. Would be a cool gauge to have.
I always wanted to put a aftermaket Air Compressor under the hood to have Air Pressure on board and connect it to a Factory Air Pressure gauge, but never got to it. Bill |

Mine is not a big truck but thought I would post what I did to my C1000. I put new decals on the main cluster, a SW tach and a clock from Bob's speedometer. Had to cut out the holes and hand paint with chrome silver around the edge of of everything and spray painted the background semi-gloss black...Vernski:)

Re: Big truck dash
Looks like a Chivy steering wheel!
|
Re: Big truck dash
And its the hard to find custom one to boot.
|
Re: Big truck dash
It sure looks like a chevy wheel to me also, but it came off a Canadian GMC 63 fleetside. Someone may have got it off a chevy or they didn't care what parts bin they robbed when it was built, just guessing lots of parts were inter-changed over the years maybe...Vernski:)

Re: Big truck dash
That makes sense they used that wheel on the canuk trucks. BC

Re: Big truck dash
How did you deal with the lettering and amber lenses on the idiot lights?
As you can see in this video mine are totally deteriorated: http://i1.ytimg.com/vi/lp9S38PNEfk/mqdefault.jpg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lp9S38PNEfk |

That looks great, Vernski.
Here's mine, along with the "aux. cluster" I fabbed... I was working on the column....still needed to be "clocked" when I took the pic. I'll take a current photo sometime soon and post it. This one's kinda crappy lookin. |
Re: Big truck dash
Rockdriller how did you make the auxillary cluster?

I took a piece of 3" aluminum channel, cut the flange on one side down to about 1/8" high...(what is now the trim line below the gauges), leaving the other flange alone...so I could drill and mount it to the bottom of the dash. Then I cut the holes for the gauges and toggle switches. I also had to make a radius...1/2 moon....cut on the top ctr. for the column... I'll take a close up. It was actually fairly easy and looks pretty good for a midnight fab-job. Thanks for the props. |

Here are a couple more variations of instrument panels. The first is in my 62 Suburban. The second is in the 66 pickup now owned by Clyde in SC. You can see both trucks in my avatar.
