Spare location on Suburbans?

It appears there wasn't one. Mine had a welded in bracket to hold one just behind the passenger door encroaching on the space to pass to the rear seat. I didn't like it and removed it.

Where did users put spares?

Both of my Suburbans have their spares mounted underneath the rear floor, between the differential and rear bumper.

Either the trailer hitch took away the under floor spare option on mine, or there never was room for 17.5" wheels there. The fuel tank is behind the rear end, so it'd have to be between the fuel tank and the bumper. I'll have to see if it'll fit there since I removed the trailer hitch.

No sign of any mounting hardware or holes for spare mounting under the floor, and I've never seen any mounting hardware displayed or for sale. The only hole is for the trailer hitch which could have been the spare mount.

I saw a picture of the underside of another 1962 Suburban, and the fuel tank was shaped with a cutout for a spare tire. Do your Suburbans have a space for a spare shaped into their fuel tanks? Mine doesn't and the rear end of my tank is flat and square to the bumper.

Remote possibility is the tank for standard 15" wheels got a tank sculpted for an underneath spare, but tank for optional 17.5" wheels was flat. Or my tank is just earlier before sculpted tanks were installed.

I'm attaching photos of the spares underneath both of my Suburbans. Note that the one ton Suburban has about a foot and a half of additional room between the rear differential and the rear bumper, so is not really relevant to the half ton Suburbans. The first two photos, though, show the spare under the half ton. The tire just fits between the gas tank and the trailer hitch. Note that the gas tank is flat on the back side, not sculpted. Not sure what size the tire is, but probably about 28" in diameter. Without a trailer hitch a bigger tire should fit.
