Wiring question

I am restoring a 79 GMC Sierra 2wd that originally had the 250 in it and I’ve found a 305 to put in it. Now that i have the new engine I’m starting to notice different connectors were used to hook up the 250. Where do i go for the right ones? Junkyard?

Re: Wiring question

Not sure what the problem is but I'll give it a stab. There are two mating pieces to a connector. You need both from the 76. The motor does not really need specific connectors. You will have to figure out the gauge wiring and wire it thru the 79 connectors if possible. The rest of the "motor" is starter, ignition and alternator wiring (all pretty simple). Splice 79 connector wires onto 305 wire or run separate wires for the previous mentioned systems. There is no magic connector. A swap like that uses the truck's connectors. You will need to read a 79 and a 305 wiring diagram and meld the two. The connectors for lights and such are not affected. You are quite far apart in years, technology, methods and gauges, so this may be a hassle if electronics or PC boards are involved.

But all the motor needs is to start, charge battery and a few gauge senders.

If I were you I would put in a 350 V8. Your idea is very odd, hard to mount, supper heavy and may be a nightmare. It may not attach to the 79 transmission. While we love GMC V6's here, this may not be the best use. 79's had 350's, they fit, they tranny up and wire up. They are plentiful with plenty of available inexpensive parts.
