Automatic adapter support rods pics

During my meeting with Ed Snyder I mentioned I had the GMC automatic transmission adapter unit with support rods for the Turbo 400. He mentioned he had not seen the support rods before.

These pictures are from RockDrillers build and it is a great one too. Here is a link to it.

...and the photos of the support rods and how they are used. Maybe it was something added in later year's production or just for the Turbo 400?. I had seen the adapters before for sale but never with the support rods included. Perhaps someone else here will add more information about when they came into use.

Re: Automatic adapter support rods pics

The purpose of the support rods, called "gussets" by GMC were used to eliminate "Cab roar". After customers complained, trucks equipped with automatics were recalled as this was very common on 67-68 V6 equipped light duty trucks. I have seen a 65 GMC with the 2 speed PowrFlow with the gussets as well. Definitely use these with your conversion.

Thanks for the compliment.
I just opened up that link and went through it.
I need to get back into feeding that thread.
To be honest, I need to pull the tranny pretty quick and I sure aint looking forward to it. I'll record it for all to see. It's liable to end up quite interesting.
As far as the automatic adapter hardware, the 351 that it came with came out of a'67 two wheel drive . And I am curious what the cross member looked like. I had to do some fab work to get those gussets to clear mine.
I wonder if someone knows if you could order the BB V-6 with an automatic in a K series truck in '67...?
I'll bet one of you knows that answer.

Automatics in GMC 4wd K model trucks were not available until 1970 and of course the V6 was dropped for that year. 1967-69 KM1500-2500 were equipped with the 3 speed manual on the column, 67 had the SM-420 4 speed option and 68-69 had the new SM-465 4 speed option.

Thanks for clearing that up, Pete.

So now I wonder if anyone has a photo of the 67/68 2wd crossmember used with the automatic and gussets and how much different it is compared to a "regular" one?

I may have a service bulletin with a pic, when I get back to the USA this weekend I'll look it up.
