292 engine pull

Got the 292 running well, but I want to pull it to fix an oil leak and upgrade the cam/cylinder head. Any advice on how to pull the engine while leaving the bellhousing and tranny in place? I drove myself crazy messing with the tranny last summer! Much appreciated for any ideas.

The only thing is that you will likely need to remove the rad to avoid damaging it.

Do I have to be worried about damaging the input shaft of the tranny? Seems like I have to be able to lift the engine up off the mounts in order to slide it forward? Rad is out and the front of the engine has been stripped. Thanks again for your help!

Re: 292 engine pull

When I pulled the 292 out of my 64 I had the whole front clip off the truck(makes things alot easier), and be sure to find the bolts Under the rubber mounts on the engine...once those are off and the engine comes off the mounts...you only need to lift it about an inch...take your flywheel inspection cover off and take all the pressure plat bolts out 1 by one...have someone crank the engine over by hand so you can access the bolts from underneath...once the pressure plat is unbolted the engine will slide right out of the shaft without issue. Do be sure the tranny is in neutral just to help make things easier. Do all this while watching the oil pan distance between the cross member. Once out of the tranny lift straight up and have at it. lol What are your plans? Lopey cam and lump port head with sbc valves? I did a 292 so if you have questions PM me.

EDIT!!! Don't forget to unbolt the bell housing from the engine. lol My bad.

Most people take the bell housing out with the motor.

Re: 292 engine pull

I actually pulled the motor out without the bell housing. Disconnected the clutch linkage from the block and unbolted the pressure plate and it slid right out. Bell housing was Much easier to pull with the engine out of the way.

Not as easy as if it was on the removed motor.

It was much easier this way then when I took the whole thing out. Nice to be able to leave the clutch and everything in place!
