New 305v6 fan in TN

Hi Everyone - just wanted to introduce myself. I'm a brand new owner of a 1964 GMC (305E, powerglide). I was actually looking for a chevy with I6 when a buddy turned me on to this GMC. I didn't know much about the difference in Chevy and GMC or these big block V6's. But after some quick research I was hooked! I've already learned so much from all you guys and I appreciate you all sharing your knowledge and experience. I hope to start a build thread soon.
As you can see the truck has no tailgate, but it came with a spare bed that I picked up yesterday. Guess what...The tailgate says CHEVROLET on it! Nothing I can't work around but we got a laugh out of that.

Welcome to the forum! You're lucky to have that rare big back window too.

Welcome to the best GMC group going. Your big back window is rare and desirable, except on HOT summer days;). We LOVE photos! There is a website for our trucks with every sort of information you can think of.

www.6066gmcguy.com

You will spend a great many hours on the page learning ALL there is to know. Everything from keeping her dead stock original to performance up grades (such as they are), plus links to other pages and PHOTOS galore.

Enjoy and welcome to the PASSION!

Thanks you guys for the warm welcome! Here are a couple more pics of the day we got it home and with it squeezed into my garage. My wife is thrilled with this! The XTerra is my daughter's, so 2 cars in the garage and neither one is momma's!

The cleaning out the garage was step 1. That was an entire weekend project! I've put a Spectre Performance air cleaner adapter on it - it came with a filter less, naked Stromberg. She runs "OK" but smells awful and crackles and pops a bit. Carb kit next. I'm keeping the Stromberg for now. When I'm able to make some decent progress I'll move to a build thread.

Thanks guys I'll be in touch!
Matt

Thanks Lewis!
A note on manuals: I tried this disk by Faxon. I got it off eBay for about $33. It's 3 separate pdf files - 1 for the 62 manual, 1 for 63 supplement, 1 for 64 supplement. In case anyone wants to add/update their library.

PS I obviously knew what manuals to order because of this site! I wouldn't have had a clue otherwise.

Quick question on carb rebuild: my carb has a block under it. There were 3 metal gaskets on each side of this block. I had to kinda dig to find them and pry them off. Do I need the metal gasket at the base of the block to intake? Or is a regular gasket Ok? My kit did not come with one so I was going to cut my own. Thanks!

Mine had one of those ultra-cheap cardboard ones there. You know, cereal box thickness and half worn through? :teehee: I'm sure you could cut your own and be better off than what was there before.

Thanks FetchmeaPepsi! I actually ended up re-using the gasket that was sandwiched in between 2 metal gaskets. It looked to be in good shape. Not sure how it works...haven't started it yet. I want to swap the gas out with some non-ethanol with marvels mystery oil 1st. I told Rudy (my son) to be prepared to take the carb back off agajn after we crank her up. Here's some pics of Rudy's 1st carb job - GO TIGERS!
Main setbacks: we forgot the needle keeper. Realized after we were completely done. We lost the BB about 6 times 😂 A pretty fun job...We did not get frustrated 1 time! But we do need to pick up the pace to a little. I think we'll get on a role here quickly.
As you can see I have a cheap adapter and paper air filter. Anybody got an old oil bath filter? I'll post in the trader section also.
I promise I will get this moved to a build thread. I cannot access the site from my laptop via Wi-Fi for some reason. I have to use my phone. I'll get It figured out.

Looks like you guys jumped right in! It's a lot more fun with a helper, ain't it?
Root Beers for all!

Those old oil bath filters are pretty easy to find. I bet if you hit up RustBucket he probably has a dozen laying around. Nobody wants them anymore, but they're my favorite. Talk about cheap upkeep!

Abus has two of em here https://6066gmcclub.com/showthread.php?t=48752 but they're a different style.

Here's one from Lizziemeister https://6066gmcclub.com/showthread.php?t=48653 but it's for a 351. Might fit, you'd have to ask BigBlockv6 on that though. I don't have that kinda experience.

Have fun! You're training future owners there, buddy!

Thanks for all the info! :signthankspin: Yes much more fun with a helper! We got a late start this weekend. Had some yard work and had to change oil in mom and sisters car 1st. Rudy has never helped me change oil before, but he was right there with me today so we could hurry up and start on his truck. Big help because I don't fit under mommas car as good as I used to.

So I got this little transfer pump and drained the tank.

The siphon hose came out with black nastiness all over it. So it was out with the seat and tank.

Sounds like sand sliding around in the bottom of the tank...yuck! We'll try to work on cleaning the tank this week. It will be tough...lots of soccer and basketball this week.

This speeds up need for new seats. I'm going with 04-06 chevy seats for seatbelts and head rests. We've got some floor pan work that we'll come back to. Rudy is anxious to hear it run. So we'll make floor pans a separate project. Double work but it will keep the project more interesting.

I polished on the grill and it came out looking like this: HA this is my 06. I had to mention my 06. I've had it since new and now have 220k miles. And don't forget there is an 06 in the middle of 6066!

Seems that Lizzimeister's air cleaner is from a 351E with the larger WWC carb so it won't fit the 305E unless you can get one of those plastic adapters.:ok:

I have one you can have. I just need to clean it up enough so it can be shipped. PM me you address and this weekend I will get it sent to you.

Big day today. We got a new gas tank from brothers installed. I ordered sending screws from lmc. We got it all put in today and it cranked right up. After a little fine tuning on the carb she is running like a top! We drove to the end of my cove a few times. I let Rudy drive too! There is no hesitation - it seems to be running great. I also replaced the universal inline filter by the carb. I have no under cab filter so add that to the list! We are really fired up. It's been a while since we've been able to work on it due to soccer, confirmation, prom, etc. Just wanted to give a quick update. Thanks!

Hi Everyone, well I don't have any pictures right now, but I wanted to update you that I got a fresh oil change this weekend. I went through the whole "wrong gasket/no gasket" thing, but I was excited to find that my local NAPA has filter 1121 IN STOCK with gasket. Everything went together good and the cannister seemed to be put together correctly. There was quite a bit of sludge in the bottom of the cannister. Upon inspecting the next morning I found no leaks at the cannister or drain plug.
I used NAPA 15W40. The bottle says "contains zinc compound." Not to start another oil debate thread, but I haven't seen much discussion on the NAPA oil, so if there is a reason I should not use it, please chime in. It's $10.99/gallon.
I wanted to change the oil because me and Rudy are probably driving too much just up and down our street, like a couple of kids with a new go kart.
I just got pre-approval to order seat cover and bed wood. I had posted earlier that we were going to use 2003-2006 seats, but we have changed our mind and are sticking with original seat (I'm so glad!). Rudy had a little party at the house and went to show some of the girls his truck. He hopped in the drivers seat and 4 girls piled in through the passenger door. They were squeezed in 5 across the bench. Right after that he said, "Dad, I think I want to keep the bench seat."
Hoping to get valves adjusted this weekend. I'll let you know how it goes. Here's a great video - I'm sure it's one of you guys! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dyoTQ0xaLBo

NAPA oil is packaged by Valvoline oil co. It is good oil.

Thanks Lewis.
Bed wood ordered! Pine wood kit from Brothers.
I also need window regulators and vent window seals. While I'm at it, I appear to be missing the felt or sweep at exterior top of the door. Is this called "division bar with felt" part 10 on this link? Thanks

Re: New 305v6 fan in TN

ODIE, I would get item 7 for the felt kit for both doors and 2 of item 11 for the regulators. While you have the ventilator out, lmc offers a vent window seal kit. They are on pg 16 items 9 & 10.
