heater core information

I have a 1962 GMC 1 ton. The heater core let go, and wondered if anyone has a manual that shows how to get to the core. Wasn't sure if the whole heater unit has to come off or just the core box section. It's a recirculation type core- inside the cab. Thanks!

heater core- need I say more?

Long time owner of a 1962- 2500 (1 ton). The heater core let loose 3 days ago. 305 V6 and the heater is a two nob on dash control, w/ recirculation type core. Heater assembly located inside of Cab, beneath the dash. Wondered if anyone has a manual to point out if the whole heating unit w/fan has to come out , or does the core section come out independent. Thanks for reading and great to read all the posts.

It's pretty easy to remove it as one unit. Take to the bench and service. Much easier to work on and check all components. Take off firewall nuts, hoses and cable. Connector unplug and it's out. Same as Chevy core. Copper or aluminum.

I have my core out, is there a rebuild service for these temp control valves? Mine is the 4-lever dash control style, 1963.

Re: heater core information

When I rebuilt my deluxe heater, I got a new core, installed it inside the firewall outside heater box. Two tubes sticking out. I will eventually install hoses and a valve on one hose and operate it from the dash lever cable.
Heater core similar to this.
Valve similar to This.
It took a small modification to heater box lid to get tubes to exit.

Re: heater core information

I found a Hemmings advertiser that specializes in vintage heater cores:http://www.heatercontrolvalve.com/. He states that the unit I have, made by Everhot (tiny logo on unit) is non-rebuildable, so I will be looking at these other options.
