Wire harness

Hi guys and gals:

This is my first post so let me introduce myself to the group.

My first truck was a 1965 1500 two wheel drive I bought for 100 bucks in 1978 while in high school. The bed had completely rusted away by that time and the gravel flying through the rust holes in the floor board would sting my legs. But boy what a truck. I still have what is left of her in Ohio, the engine. In the early 90's I bought a 1963 k1500, an ex brush truck for a fire department. Over the years I have obtained and stored many new gm parts. The restoration has been on and off. In October of last year a friend from here in the Washington dc area moved to San Fransisco. So in order to help the young guy out it was decided that he buy me a parts truck as the 1963 k1500 really could use a new cab and he would take my big diesel and equipment trailer move his jeep and other things like sofas etc to sf around Christmas I would return to dc with the parts truck in tow. I paid for the diesel there and back.

Well, the parts truck is a 1962 1500 gmc that is in such good shape I could not use it as a parts truck although it does have a chevy hood, the 63 gmc hood will soon be replacing it till i get a proper one. On my way back I picked up a cab in Denver for my 63 k1500.

So here is my question. I had bought an engine/generator(alternator) harness a few years back For the 63 and it turns out that it is perfect for the 1962. But I cannot remember where I got it. Chevys are strange for they use two separate harnesses for this. Classic parts in Kansas city lists a gmc harness for 64 up. So it could not have been from them. So could you guys and gals point me to a place that makes high quality GMC wire harnesses for 62 and 63?? I need to replace the one I am using for the 62 now.

By the way I just love reading all the posts. Also it feels good to be driving a 305 v6 again. Mike of Alexandria, va 62 1500, 63 k1500, 65 1500

Most of the vendors don't know how differant the GMC is from a Chevy, so they try to tell you that a Chevy harness will work. I don't know of anyone selling them made to fit a GMC, most have had to rebuld what they got. I had a 62 parts truck that was in good shape once, and the wire harness were are the first things I sold off it.

I don't have the right answer for you, but I have a few suggestions on where to look.

Painless Performance: http://http://www.painlessperformance.com/
American Auto Wire: http://http://www.americanautowire.com/
EZ: http://http://www.ezwiring.com/index.html
M&H Electrical: http://http://www.wiringharness.com/

Most of the guys on the 67-72chevytruck.com forum have recommended all of these, but most of them are all Chevy specific, may not fit us GMC guys. Worth a shot to call and find out though.

Re: Wire harness

Chevrolet mounts the Alternator on the Drivers side of the engine and with this placement vs a GMC w/ pass side mounting, it did not makes sense to mount the voltage reg on the inner fender like GMC or have a single harness, so Chevy made a harness to work for the application. A 1960-1962 GMC harness would be for a generator and have different wires for the generator than an alternator harness - a 63-66 harness would be for the Alternator. As far as I know you have to find one in a salvage yard if you want a correct GMC harness. Not sure why you think the 1964 repop harness would not work on any 60-66 V6 engine if you are running an alternator?
