Tough to find; I recently bought a "conversion" gasket set that had everything but the top end, from eBay.

Someone had posted about a place that would make you a set but that's all I recall.

Re: V6 Magnum Gaskets

Cometic can make custom gaskets. Also gasketstogo.com can do custom MLS (multi layer steel) gaskets whereas Cometic will not do one offs or small batches of MLS gaskets.

Re: V6 Magnum Gaskets

You can make head gaskets out of 16 gauge copper sheet. I do it all the time for antique engines. Gmc v6 used copper on the early motors. And it's all I use on the ones I redo.

Re: V6 Magnum Gaskets

http://www.gasketstogo.com custom makes gaskets in any material and and configuration. I have used them for VW diesel engines with great success (as well as loads of early vw diesel & rabbit/caddy pickup truck owners) & am also using them for some custom big bore Suzuki GS 4 cyl motorcycle multi-layer steel head gaskets.

On the MLS gaskets at least, there is a big price break when purchasing 5 or more gaskets, due to tooling/setup involved.

What tooling do you use and how do you cut the copper sheet?

Is that for a 305 or 351? I would assume that most everything crosses over between the two except the head gasket, correct?

the set was for 351s and 401s

All but the magnum top end gaskets should fit the 305

Re: V6 Magnum Gaskets

Now that I have an intake set (thanks again bob), I'm looking into what it would take to get a cricut type cutter to make a few sets of the intake gaskets or at least provide a pattern for members. I have a sheet of fel-pro exhaust gasket material and need to create a template for those gaskets.

I also have been emailing a place in Canada that claims they can get them but I asked that they verify availability before I place the order. Much like the 3 other places I found that that listed them on their websites. if they can get them I'll post it.

Re: V6 Magnum Gaskets

Paper gaskets are simple to make with a small ball peen hammer. Copper head gaskets. I drill all the holes on a small drill press. The cylinders. I get to a 1/8 inch using a cutter in a mill. Backing the copper with plywood. Then I glue the copper to the block with hi-tack. Plus a couple of bolts. Then I put the boring bar on the block. And set the cutter to the bore and back it up through the copper. Perfect fit. Then aneall the copper and spray a little copper cost spray. Takes about an hour to make a set.

Re: V6 Magnum Gaskets

The Canadians fell through so I went ahead and bought a used digital scrapbooking cutter in order to replicate Magnum intake gaskets. I'm still hunting for a good gasket material the FelPro Karropak looks a little too thin @1/16"

I have ordered from are friends to the North before, with same results, even called them and they said they could get them, but after a week to 10 days I would get a refund, but never hurts to try.

Here is a template of the Magnum exhaust gasket that I made. Still might need some final tweaking. Im going to try dry run with the cutter on thin cardboard tomorrow. It can do multiple cuts so hopefully it can do the gasket material.

I'm also in need of intake and exhaust gaskets for my 351E, any will be appreciated, thanks

I could also use a set of the Magnum exhaust gaskets if you make some.

I thought the intake Gaskets on a magnum motor were the same as a 305,only the exhaust has larger ports. Dave

Re: V6 Magnum Gaskets

no the magnum and E engines are larger port intake and exhaust, luckily my old intake gaskets are intact will maybe ill have to copy them make my own

I have a 401M and have have had the intake off, 305 Gaskets fit fine on the intake side. Also had a full set of 305 Gaskets and a full set of 401 Magnum Gaskets there was No difference on the intake side either on the motor or the gasket sets. Exhaust was much bigger on the Magnun. Dave

they are different as you can in these pictures, the 305 may work but not right and may cause Intake leak luckily my old gaskets may still be usable

Re: V6 Magnum Gaskets

this is my 351E which is the same as the 351M and 401M with the larger ports on both the manifold and head, someone put a 305 small port intake this engine at one time if look close at my pictures you can see it was sealed correctly

I looked them up, but they have nothing in their catalog for 1960+ GMC truck specific engines. They can hand cut custom gaskets, but only paper/felt/etc, no head gaskets or anything with rolled metal sealing areas.

I have had some good luck with http://www.gasketstogo.com on Custom Suzuki 4 cylinder motorcycle & VW 4 cylinder IDI diesel MLS head gaskets in Multi-Layer Steel gaskets. They can custom make about anything. Sending a proper CAD drawing is best. We had some alignment issues on one batch of Suzuki GS650 custom big bore gaskets, but when a CAD drawing was sent for the re-make in lieu of a gasket scan or used gasket sample, all came out well.

Re: V6 Magnum Gaskets

thanks but I'm not computer wizard dont know how to do cad drawings of my old gaskets, and I dont want to send mine to Thailand I'm gonna look into reusing them or finding some gasket stock and making my own, thanks though

Re: V6 Magnum Gaskets

If I recall, someone on this forum has CAD drawings of many of our big block V6 gaskets already made up.

Cutting paper/felt/neoprene/viton/etc isnt too difficult. The rubbery materials are a bit tougher. A set of hole punch pliers or hollow point punches really help.

Quigley September 24th, 2018 06:33 PM

Re: V6 Magnum Gaskets

Felpro 305 intake Gaskets will work fine on a magnum motor. Surface the exhaust manifolds on a belt sander surface machine and don't use Gaskets on them and your in business. Don't over complicate, that is my experience. Dave

63gmc4x4 September 24th, 2018 09:22 PM

Re: V6 Magnum Gaskets

your probably right, but what is the point of the larger free flowing intake manifold if it blocked by 1/2 inch hanging in gasket material from the smaller gaskets

Re: V6 Magnum Gaskets

I tried to make magnum exhaust gaskets out of a sheet of the same material as the regular exhaust gaskets. The scrapbook cutter I used didn't have enough pressure to cut the material. I wound up cutting them out manually. I was able to get set of magnum intakes from a board member.

They do not block anything, they are the same size. I have a 401M motor and 3 305s. The head ports are the same on the 401M,the only difference is the design of the 401 intake and the port for two cylinders are combined 305 Gaskets will work perfectly and not block anything. Dave

63gmc4x4 September 26th, 2018 06:35 AM

Re: V6 Magnum Gaskets

you must have a different 401M if the port size is the same as the 305, my 351E port size is alot bigger thus using a smaller 305 gaskets it hangs into the flow of the air/fuel mixture coming in, and or doesn't cover the complete gasketa surface area onto the outer edge ,sure it may seal up okay but may leak over time I just dont like the gasket haanging in the way from intake into cylinder head, did you see my pictures?

63gmc4x4 September 26th, 2018 06:42 AM

Re: V6 Magnum Gaskets

I'll post another picture tomorrow of the size difference of the ports 305 vs 351E, then may you can understand what I'm trying to accomplish, maybe I have a one of kind 351E with very large ports or the 401M were smaller then the 351E? I've only had 305s apart this is my first 351, you can clearly see the differences in size with naked eye, thanks

When I bought my 401M many years ago, it came with non-Magnum heads and manifolds. It's possible yours did too.

They are Magnum heads. The Exhaust ports are much larger. On the intakes 305 Felpro Gaskets fit perfect Magnum motors have larger exhaust ports and a redesigned intake manifold, not large intake ports. Dave

well the gaskets are not even close to the same as such they will hang in the air fuel path causing performance problem so i will be copying my old gaskets and making my own, pictures to follow
