'61 Dana 44 BOM?

Hi,

My '61 'burb has the standard Dana 44 rear end, with 3.07 gears. I want to replace the bears and seals.

I got underneath today to try to find some ID numbers, but the "2375-1" that I found on the tube didn't match up with anything I could find on the Dana site.

Any clues that would help me find a master rebuild kit (or any parts list) for it? The local trans shops aren't being as helpful as they used to be.

I rebuilt my 1960 Dana 44. I will dig out the parts I used. What bearings and what seals are you prepared to do?
1. Pinion bearing
2. Carrier bearings
3. Wheel bearings
4. Wheel seals
5. Pinion seal

There is no crush sleeve. The proper way is buy two sets of bearings. One is for calibration. Other is final. The calibration set gets lightly ground to be able to slip on and off. You can do the differential any way you want. Just my advice. I did it per the book. I will post part numbers on Mon if your diff is era correct. The D44's are pretty much the same. Your ring gear will have a date and the ratio. Mine was 3.92 . 4X4. The kits will include a set of shims for all areas.
Do you have a cast marking saying 44? AKA HO35. Is it a drop out or a 10 bolt "corporate"? or is it a newer swap out? Just being sure because lots of things happen to trucks over the years.

Ken,

Thanks! Yeah, the casting says 44 on it, and the ratio tag still says 3.07. I didn't find a posi tag, so short of opening it up to check, I think it's open.

This is something I don't have the experience or precision to do myself, so I'm going to pay a transmission place to do it, but they all say "find the parts and we can do it."

It leaks from the pinion seal and the wheel bearings need changing. I think they will have to have it all apart to fix those two, and for the incremental cost it doesn't seem to make sense to put it back together with anything used. I'd like to get the equivalent of the "master rebuild kit" with pinion, carrier, and wheel bearings and seals.

This is the place I went to for my Dana 60:

Use the Wizard on the right.

I had replaced everything inside the rear axle and installed a limited slip unit too.

I think my numbers are old but the wizard posted by James is what you want. I get Kit YK D44-Rear or ZBK D44-Rear. I used spyder kit ZIKD44-S-30. (30 spline). I see that PN on the Randy's site also. The extra bearings for set up ,I think, are Carrier=cone 25577/cup 25520 D and Pinion= cone 02872/cup 02820

The ZK D44-Rear has Koyo bearings and YK has Timken.

Could not find a shim pack on that site.
My box says U.S. Gear which is associated with Yukon Gear.
Classic Truck Parts now has quite a selection of differential parts for Spicer Dana 44. Check out Jake's info. I believe 60-62 stuff might be different than 63-66.

Axle bearing 514003 (O'Reilly's). This is the kind with a pressed on collar. To remove old, you drill a hole partial way thru and split with a chisel.

There is your BOM. If a wizard only has 1/2T 4X4/K10, I pick that and use the rear parts. Same diff as 2X4.
