K1001 Locking Hubs
Hey guys, Need some help with locking hubs. I have a 1962 K1001 panel truck. I am looking to add locking hubs. I have been back and forth with Warn and they came up with the 9790, 19 spline, Internal hub as being the one that "looks" like it will work. They didn't leave me with a warm feeling that these are the right hubs. Has anyone added hubs to one of these rigs and what hubs did you use? Thanks for the help.

Re: K1001 Locking Hubs
Here's my "Name" notes on the hubs. I hope it helps some.
They're labeled Power Train Tools, but they're really just rebranded Selectro's. They've been called Sears brand and Dualamatic as well. They were OEM from many vehicles for years. They are used on Military vehicles. They were sold by Husky up until they were bought out by MileMarker and then the quality fell off. With luck Warn can cross reference Milemarker hubs and get a match. I think JGroby replaced his recently. You might try sending him a pm. |
Re: K1001 Locking Hubs
Mine had 19 spline WARN. 1960 GMC K1001. Dana 44. It does look like 20990 chrome and 9790 probably non chrome is the part number. :shocked:WARNING::shocked: Now-a-days....do not order anything unless from a well known company and get an email stating they are IN STOCK! IN HOUSE. READY TO SHIP. NO back order!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NO drop ship from their vendor.

Re: K1001 Locking Hubs
Thanks for the feedback. Looks like the 9790 Hubs may be the right model. Now the challenge is to find them. They’re back ordered everywhere.

Re: K1001 Locking Hubs
Hey guys, I was able to locate the 9790 hubs in a Warn dealer's inventory. I have them and have started installation. Something doesn't look right. With the 9790 installed, the axle shaft is only engaging about 1/3 of the spline ring inside the 9790 (see attached picture). The hub is fully seated, I am just barely able to get the snap ring in. Does this look right to you?

I’m not an expert, but I think you might have the wrong hubs. The new hubs you have use screws and snap rings. I think the original ones had snap rings only.
Model WL-1000 or Model M8 (WL-1000) The warn 9790 and 20990 only fit Chevrolet/GMC - 69–87 - 1/2 Ton Pickup and 69–91 - Blazer, Jimmy, Suburban. This is from Warn Website. |

I based my comment on the web saying 9790 fits Dana 44. After searching more, I think GMC JR. is correct. I also found pics of my 1960 hubs and some literature I guess I saved. Several forums show people having trouble figuring this out. Trouble finding the correct hub. They say Spicer hubs were original. Warn was aftermarket. This hub is said to be 60-68. Not easy to find. Maybe there is an adaption kit now. Don't know.
It seems you bought from a Warn dealer? Did you confirm from him they fit 1962? |
Re: K1001 Locking Hubs
I've had multiple conversations with Warn. They finally settled on the 9790 as being likely to fit. To be fair, they said my truck was not listed in the fitment notes. So it looks like I should be looking into the WL-1000. The search continues.

Re: K1001 Locking Hubs
Thank you. I really appreciate the help. Looks like I have a bit of a challenge ahead of me locating hubs to fit my truck. I guess I expected that when the Warn rep was having problems making a definitive selection.

Re: K1001 Locking Hubs
Ok guys, tell me if you think this is a crazy idea. As per my earlier post, the Warn 9790 fit perfectly except that it didn't sit back far enough to fully engage the splines in the axle. What if I had the cylinder on the wheel hub machined to shorten it? That would move the Warn hub back further onto the axle. There appears to be plenty of clearance inside the cylinder of the wheel hub. WDYT? Is this idea crazy?

Re: K1001 Locking Hubs
Thank you for sending this along. Since it is a live auction, I have placed it on my watch list to see how crazy the bidding gets. Once again, my truck (1962 GMC K1001) is not specifically listed in the fitment notes. Is there a way to confirm these will actually fit?

Re: K1001 Locking Hubs
I would give Mile Marker a call. And do some searches on the internet. This is the third time he had then up for sale.

Re: K1001 Locking Hubs
I spent a lot of time searching the web. Found three sites that listed the Mile Marker hub in stock only to call and find out it was not. Finally bit the bullet and bought the ones on eBay. This lets me move on to the next task, the distributor. Thanks for your help and suggestions.
