V6 306 power steering pump bracket

I'm pleased to have found a dedicated GMC site such as this. I have done a complete frame off build for our '56 chev, '24 Ford cpe and '40 Ford sdn. Now working on my wife's '65 GMC with factory installed El-Dorado camper. No frame off for this big guy. lol

After a few trips this summer I am determined to convert to power steering. I bought a kit from Tucker that has everything needed but the steering pump bracket for the V6 engine. Sooooooooooo

I am desperate to either find used or new for sale, find someone that might send me detailed pics of theirs, or let me borrow one (with a fair deposit) so I can try to copy it. I am trying to not have to start from scratch with cardboard and pen. After 3 weeks of searching now the cardboard is bleakly looking like it is in my future. Thanks for the look. Fourdy

Welcome to the forum Fourdy!

Beautiful Camper you have there and would love to see more photos. :coolphotos:

The PS Bracket was made two styles, that I am aware of, from the factory.

Some have used other style of brackets that were fabricated or borrowed from other applications and "made to work." (Last photo)

The key is to procure the factory double-groove water pump and crank pulleys and that can be a challenge. They came on the light duty and big trucks too.

You may wish to post a WTB in the for-sale section or PM RUSTBUCKET as he sells parts.

Photos of the two styles of pumps; the big round version (Left) is early and the thin one (Right)

These pulleys are the most common version I have seen, but some were also cast iron. There was even an add-on pulley for the crank, but I think that was for AC applications, but could be made to work.

The last photo is a fabricated system I think made by Member RockDriller.

Hope this helps and here's a CL ad that list parts for the GMC V6

Thank you so much Funky61. I have a machinist friend that said he would help get some pulleys matched up and work on some kind of bracketrie unless you have one of the double pullys for sale????

Again, thank you for your help.

Fourdy

PS I'll try to get some more pics posted.

You're welcome Fourdy; sorry I do not have any pulleys for sale, those were old pics I took of a GMC collector's stash.

Here is a possible (?) alternative for adding more grooves to the crank. I noticed a 3-groove pulley, used on 401 Nail head Buicks and 455's, had "almost" the same bolt pattern as the GMC (minus two more holes). I took a shot and bought one to see if it would work. The Red Pulley is the factory single groove unit. :newidea:

It's close but the bolts do not line up, still it's something to consider. Maybe tack weld or just drill out the holes? I don't know if the balance of the pulley would be problematic, and you would still have the double groove water pump pulley to find as well. :headscratch:

Of course, the Factory Pulleys are always preferred

I was just messing with the idea before I found a set of factory pulleys, so proceed at your own risk.
